System Rebooting.....

Post by Avtar » Sat Nov 09, 2013 4:11 pm

Hi All,

A very strange intermittent problem has started to occur, when driving, whether I am listening to the IPOD, radio or using the nav the system just dies! the screen goes blank and after a short while the BMW logo appears and it is back to normal, anyone else had this?

We get the same problems on our controllers at work, it's usually a dry joint on a PCB, or a bad connection on a multiplug that can be sorted with electrical solvent cleaner spray. The dry joint would need to be re soldered though. The pain is finding the culprit.

@ the OP.

Is your car under warranty btw?

I emailed the dealer to confirm it is covered by AUC but not heard back yet.

Yes, indeed it is under warranty, had a funny feeling I should have kept it going

When mine played up on the E92 it was corrected with a software upgrade.

You never know, might be an inbuilt timed failure ;-)

Gave them a ring this morning - dealer said they can't see why it wouldn't be covered so will check it when the car is on for an MOT next month.

I've had the same problem with my '58 3.0sd - About 10 days ago the radio just stopped during a long motorway drive and the BMW logo appeared on the iDrive display. Pressing the iDrive know & selecting radio resumed the same radio station. Second time, again during a fairly long journey, the display just went black and the radio stopped. Pressing the iDrive button produced the BMW logo and the radio could then be selected normally. I've had the car since July '12 and it's never had the problem before. About a year back I had the well reported 4x4 error and the dealer did the software download that was around at the time. No more occurrences of that - fortunately.

Have spoken to the local BMW dealer today, who agrees with my thought that the problem may be battery related. I've seen references to failing batteries on E70s causing a range of unexpected electrical faults. Car is just over 5 yrs old, 43K miles but I have no idea how hard the battery worked during its first 4 years. After being parked for 24 hrs the battery voltage is exactly 12.0 volts. I might have expected a tad higher. My next move will be to leave my smart charger on it over night and see what the charger display & battery volts look like after a few hours.

I have recently renewed my BMW warranty on the car, so am hoping that will cover possible problems with charging systems or radio, although not the battery of course.

Really interesting post. Thanks.

Might be worth checking the battery before I get a diagnostics done.

Although I've not had any other issues, which I thought a failing battery might. For e.g.. heated seats still work, no issue with radio, bluetooth or the like.

Very interesting, as mine is also a 58 plate 3.0sd?

I went a bit further with investigating the state of my battery. After a long-ish drive, and engine at idle, the battery volts are >14V, so the charging system seems OK. Then I left my C-Tech 5A charger on it for a few hours and it cycled nicely through its test-charges etc and reached the final green-LED condition. Next stage will be to see if I can get enough access to the cells to test the electrolyte with a hydrometer.

This week I've been deflected from electrics by loss of tyre pressure messages due to TWO punctures in rear tyres (a nail in one and a screw in the other). Having accepted that I needed 2 new tyres (Bridgestone Duelers), my friendly tyre dealer had to break the news that I have a serious crack (out of sight, in the inner rim) of one of the wheels. So tomorrow the new wheel arrives from local BMW dealer. An expensive week :(
