Engine Oil question

Post by sonny007 » Tue Nov 19, 2013 3:38 pm

Hi,

Just checked the engine oil in my X5 3.0d 2005 and its black.

Was wondering whats the best oil and how many litres would I need?

Maybe worth changing the oil breather........I don't have a diesel so cant be specific but a new vortex one was fitted after a certain date. The diesel brigade will be able to advise on this dealer part.

Stealer and about £45. My 2006 had the vortex and my 2004 didn't. You're in the middle so may or may not.

Facelifted Diesels had the new vortex type fitted. Facelifted was from somewhere in 2004 up. I have a 2005 and it has the vortex and doesn't need changing, although some people do.

If when you accelerate and you are pouring out black smoke, then you need to change the breather as a start.

Valvoline is good oil, but the recommend is Castrol Fully Synthetic and some use Mobil1. Just make sure the specs match (specs can be found in the car booklet or a search will show, I don't have it in front of me atm).

I have changed the oil numerous times and it takes 7.5 litres, so 2*4 Litres you need.

Just for your information, Diesel oil is always black. It blackens from the soot. Once you put the new oil in, check it in a few days using the dipstick and you will see it is black already..

Not always true.  Mine was a face lifted 2005 and did not have one.  It still had the foam bogroll.  There is no hard and fast rule, but for the sake of £50 you could always do a 'sale or return' from BMW Parts.

As above, Diesel oil goes black very quickly. Any fully synthetic is fine as long as it meets BMW LL04 and ACEA C3 standards.  OEM is Castrol Edge Professional 0W30 or 5W30.  I think it's now called Edge FST.

The above can be verified as my 54 plate facelift had the bog roll type

+2

My 2005 05 had bog roll aswell..

Changing it has reduced black smoke considerably.
