X6 40d

Post by Flash » Wed Nov 13, 2013 12:19 pm

Hi,
I've just bought a 2011 X6 40d, I'll be picking it up at the end of the month! White with black 20" wheels and black interior.

This will be BMW number 7 for me and after 18 months in the Audi Q7 it felt like coming home when I test drove an X6.

No pics yet as the car I've bought wasn't in stock yet. I'll see it for the first time the day I pick it up.

Hope it works in snow....

Welcome aboard......and another X6 member at that.. :)

The car isn't bad in snow but a lot of 'X' owners run a 19" (or 18") set of wheels in the winter season on their E70 & 71 versions.  There's a long thread on the site to help you decide the 'if and what' should you want to go that way too.

Xs on 20s summer rubber are shit in the snow and bordering on dangerous as 2.5t is a lot to catch when it starts sliding.
Currently :
2012 Audi RS4 (B8)
2012 Porsche Boxster S (981)
2008 Lotus Exige S (a bit modified!)
2015 Nissan Leaf twin turbo with Nitros

Previously :
2008 BMW X5 3.0sd MSport
2005 BMW 535d MSport

Have to admit I've never had any real problems running the X on summer tyres in the winter months/snow.

You probably don't get real snow up there!

I got stuck on the flat whilst picking up my frigging Chinese (food!) a few years ago!

The X6 is fine as long as you take it steady.  535dboy doesn't have that phrase in his bohemian dictionary (and worse still, he drives an Audi)..... :P

He's only allowed on here coz he knows dark secrets about our two moderators...... :camera:

Disagree.

On one occasion I was only doing about 10mph and it went in to a massive slide.

For the first time in a car I would be the slowest thing in the snow because it was so un safe with massive of other cars behind me and it isn't through a lack of skill

Audi I think you will find was one of the first mass market cars available with 4wd so I guess they know what they are doing. BMW had to buy a whole manufacturer, keep some bits (but not all of the best bits!) and sell it again!

I thought you had an X5 not an X6?  The transmission is different on the X6.

That is the difference I meant, and it didn't let me down once in the heavy snow of 2010/11.  It was well behaved on ice too.

The winter tyres didn't go on until late January 2011 due to stock issues so I had a few weeks of trixxy conditions on the back roads which never get gritted.  The E46 was lethal by comparison!!

MPower - the X6 has a different electronic rear diff only fitted to the X5(M).  :)

Air suspension in the rear is also a cost option.  Most have conventional springs/dampers only all round.

Neither of which will have helped it be any better than an X5!!!!
