This seems to be a bit of a weird issue.... On startup from cold I seem to be getting issues, on occasion the starter seems to stay engaged and on other occasions it will start gets upto around 1000 rpm and then drops off and stalls.
All of this seems to be avoided if I give it a little gas.
I have done a lot of searching and see a lot of posts relating to valvetronic levers? I am guessing this is what it maybe but is there anyway of nailing it down to this? I have no warning lights at all.
I have recently replaced an ignition coil but not sure this would have any impact as this was causing a misfire whilst driving at any speed.
Any help or previous experiences would be appreciated.

Might well be worth seeing if you can get the fault logs read out. Depending upon your location there may well be a member close by with a code reader. Some BMW Indy garages can do it, and all Dealers. That may help narrow down what the issue might be.

Will BMW Scanner do this? Have just purchased but I need a laptop for it now as my macbook is no good for it.
Would you not normally expect to see a fault on the dash (engine management)
Seems it just takes ages to start in the cold now... Maybe about 3-4 secs and a lot of gas needed!!!

Re: Strange Rough Idle on Starting
My scanner has arrived today and managed to do a quick scan. Got literally about 100 odd errrors. Take it these will be all historical ones? Anyone have any ideas what exactly I should be looking for?
Seem to get some funny read outs as well with the scanner. Loads of modules that say no module, but in places where I definitely have one, for instance cruise contol. Is this a normal read out, as have had a few issues connecting it and wondering if I may have a fault unit.
