I had this in my E39.  It was the centre brake light.

I get this alot and its because the connectors on the bulb holder has rusted really badly, even destroyed some parts of it, the slight twist though and its working again.  So sometimes i get the message but by the next drive its gone again.  Check you bulb holder connectors.

Can't your tame mechanic (aka Sanj) sort it all for you?  He's good at that sort of thing. :)

Even his skills have only left temp fixes. Problem is everytime I order parts I forget to order a new bulb holder. Done it again today. Dooh.

I am a new owner 52 4.4 Sport, and was faced with this issue last week.
Stripped lights out and cleaned bulb holder connections and the board with a fibreglass pen, solved the problem.
