ok people what mpg is your car reading. mine seen to be using a lot of fuel even on a 200 mile drive its never goes over 25mpg. if I put £40 of fuel in it I get a about 165 miles does that sound high to you
Re: 2006 x5 3.0L D low mpg
I have just filled mine up and she had done 450 miles since the last fill up. 50 miles (at most) were motorway driving and the rest pottering around town.
On a motorway run? Well, we did Harrogate and back a few months back and that was 470 miles. I still had a quarter of a tank so she would probably have done near to 600 miles??
OBC shows 31mpg average and that seems to be my town driving average..
Its a late '03 facelift by the way..

Re: 2006 x5 3.0L D low mpg
looks like i am used to much them forgot to say am getting black smoke on acceleration to
Re: 2006 x5 3.0L D low mpg
Is the servicing up to date? Could be a factor.
I think a knackered MAF could cause both problems. Might be worth giving it a clean to see if it has any effect.
I am sure aomeone more technical than me could point you in the right direction!

Black smoke an acceleration is normal providing it isn't excessive.
Cheapest so,Union will be to do an oil and filter change and an air filter change - good idea to change the crankcase breather at the same time. All are straightforward DIY jobs.
If that doesn't do anything then the MAF is an option as are the vacuum lines to make sure you have no leaks or disconnects. Any issues with acceleration (other than smoke)?.

oil air fuel filters were done only 3000 miles ago. the car feels a little down on power to
Re: 2006 x5 3.0L D low mpg
Could be a vacuum hose then. If there is a leak the turbo boost drops and the smoke level goes up. Most of them are on the right side of the engine.

Regarding the blue smoke on start up I asked that on here before and was told that it's down to the electronics over fuelling on purpose at start up, and is perfectly normal.
Edit- thinking about it I have reread the comment and mine was just a puff of smoke on start up not 2-3secs.

Re: 2006 x5 3.0L D low mpg
Don't worry mine has smoked on start up for the last two winters, I took it back to the dealer I bought it from and they sent it into a diesel specialist who said it was over fuelling on cold
Start up and it's nothing to worry about , but since then I have found I have two heater plugs down but it still starts ok on cold mornings ,
I will leave well alone till I have problems starting as I don't want to snap a heater plug in the head,
