Poorly V8

Post by martinglester » Mon Oct 28, 2013 8:53 pm

Hi guys & girls,

Just under months into what was very happy X5 ownership unfortunately I have a very poorly car.

Back end of last week pulled into the driveway and opened the door to say hello to the dog before I switched her off, knocking noise like you wouldn't believe. Long and short timing chain tensioner failed and in the couple of mile journey home has chewed the chain guides.

Its a 2001 4.4i with 121,000 on the clock, have a limited aftermarket warranty but not going to cover anywhere near the value.

Word of warning, worth changing the tensioner for the minimal cost at reasonable mileage.

Quick query, looking at sales of goods act it looks like the dealer could be responsible to foot the bill if the warranty doesn't, anyone had experience of this?

Thanks,

Martin

Hi and welcome to the rum.

Sorry to hear you bad news, I think and you may need to check with trading standards, but if you bought a car from a dealer i think there is a statutory 3 month warranty they have to give, not sure what it would cover , but its a starting point.

Have had word from the garage that I have the car with for the repair today, warranty company have asked for the car to be stripped completely before they will commit to anything but made the statement that "its common wear and tear on these" and "it must have been like it when he bought it" so can already see that they are planning to wriggle out of it.

In the meantime of course I would have to pay for the engine to be stripped down (full days labour) with a good chance of having to cover it with no way of getting it back.

Going to call the dealer I bought it from tomorrow and leave it with him, in my opinion and from what I have read it is up to them. Although I had only paid 4k for what is a
great car for the extra 3k I have been quoted for the repair there is a 57k miles 4.6 with tv front and back and one owner!

All I want is the car I bought 2 months ago back, was just starting to really love it.

For anyone remotely interested, have agreed to put £250.00 towards the cost with the dealer covering the rest, am happy with this in the grand scheme of things!

This was the rather upsetting view last weekend :'-(

From what I have read around the web if you are still on the original tensioner at 100k its worth doing,  not an expensive part but can have expensive consequences if it fails. A lot of people seem to have to replaced them due to the start up rattle which mine had and was diagnosed as VANOS rattle.

Would you believe yesterday I finally received my repaired car back yesterday, don't think I have ever missed a vehicle so much! Running sweet now and also a couple of other issues sorted (coolant and oil leak)  inadvertently means the grief may have been worthwhile! Next steps are angel eyes and LED interior kit to make myself feel better.

Good to hear it's sorted - no one wants to find that sound on a V8.

Oh dear.... :(

What we need is a clip of it running right now.  The V8 makes a lovely sound.  :spiderman:
