Would a new car stereo and speakers invalidate my BMW warranty with Mondial?

Post by sallyjc » Sat Oct 26, 2013 5:51 pm

Hi

I have had my X5 over a year now and the sound of the stereo is getting on my nerves as it is so bad!

If I had a new stereo or maybe just some new speakers fitted would that invalidate my BMW warranty that I have with Mondial?

I must confess to not really understanding how it all works. Is it rather that the item that is changed and the item that breaks (and needs a warranty repair) somehow have to be connected, so that BMW can say I caused it? Or is it perhaps they don't want ANY changes to be done to the car whatsoever?

I imagine a new car stereo would involve tinkering with the electrics so could BMW say that caused the motor in my electric window to break (for example).

Thanks very much

Sally

Try speakers 1st - only use a professional who understands the system and don't tell mondial or BMW. It should only affect speaker claims or claims where link / causation attributed to the upgrade. New ones will be behind current grills

Hi

Thank you for the advice. Fitting new speakers first sounds like a good idea. How about a new subwoofer?

I imagine one with a JBL label would be a giveaway so what if I fitted a BMW one? I guess I have two questions:

1. I guess this would fool the dealer as it looks like a BMW installation?
2. Does the BMW subwoofer sound good? No in comparison to the JBL but in comparison to not having one at all! Because if it sounds awful it might not be worth it.

Also, one final question please. I saw a company online that was selling speakers and they said they would also fit Dynamat to the doors. Would this invalidate the warranty?

Thanks
Sally

Yes factory upgrade will look original kit but they will likely  spot it if you claim re an audio issue. I wouldn't fit aftermarket myself though others here have dabbled on earlier models. Like I say I would start with the speakers - others may disagree or be able to offer more advice. Oh and no idea re the door stuff I assume its for acoustics or to stop vibration.

Quotes and discussions with a proper audio shop will give you some ideas maybe

Hi

Thanks for the info, I will do as you say then!

Just one question, for anyone who can answer really.

Does anyone on here have the BMW installed subwoofer? Can you hear it when it is switched on? I realise that it won't be as good as other subwoofers but is it better than nothing?

Thanks very much

Sally
