hi, has anyone considered retro fitting the new (e70) twin scroll turbos to the earlier E53 3.0d
from what i understand the twin part comes from the exhaust manifold being separated into the back 3 cylinders and a separate front 3 cylinders and then each outlet feeding the two separate scroll on the turbo, is it practical to retro this
would there be any significant performance gains, either power and or economy??
at what stage of life do you consider one of these motors to be to worn to handle upgrades??
i have 184000 km on my 2005 diesel and its running perfectly ( so,s the tranny) and im tempted to do either the above , if it would fit or a re-map, im just concerned with effecting the longevity of the motor.
as i own the car im happy to mess with it a little, i have no intentions of replacing it,

twin scroll turbos
Re: twin scroll turbos
To fit a twin scroll would probably involve a large amount of modification due to the different size and the control complexity.
They don't actually supply any more power than a conventional turbo, they just manage lag much better.
If you want more power, you might be better to try and source a twin turbo setup from a 335d or 535d and fit that. It would be cheaper to buy as there's loads more damaged/old ones about.
Either way, good luck!

Re: twin scroll turbos
I thought the twin scrolls were on the petrol models only with the diesels getting twinned but separate turbos.
Certainly need plenty of new plumbing, control valves and a remap. It's almost certainly possible, but a remap would most likely see better results.

Re: twin scroll turbos
you may be right however i thought that the twin scroll was the difference between 30d,s and 35d,s the later being twin scroll
Re: twin scroll turbos
I would say Richard is right.
I also agree that there maybe a smashed 3/5/6/x3/x5/x6 somewhere that the engine could be liberated from.

Re: twin scroll turbos
Macca,
the 30d is single turbo, the 35d is twin turbo.
Two separate turbos on the 35.
