Even more nerdy.......and allows stalking of members on their way to furreign places.

And of course you can always buy (sorry Sanj) an ADS-B ground receiver like Airnav Radarbox or an SBS-3 unit to really see what is going on above you......and if it's squawking 7500, 7600 or 7700 it's got a problem with 7700 being the most serious.

Yes - we use it whenever we have visitors arriving by plane into Toronto.  It helps to know when to leave our house and drive to the airport and not be waiting for too long for visitors to get off the aircraft and through immigration etc.

There are other similar websites but this ones as good as any I've tried.  There's also a simulated cockpit view which uses (I assume) Google Earth to show what you would see from the cockpit given the declared position of the aircraft.  Not high res but a bit of fun.

It's also available on smartphones and the really clever ones (that have a built in compass) can use the paid version of flightradar24 to identify a plane in the sky just by pointing your smartphone camera at it.

really ....and there's me using it for amusement  :-[

what I did find was that I could visually track a 777 from Manchester Airport to Sheffield as judged by continual light flashing and the tracker showing me where it was over the ground...quite a distance really
