X5 4.8is

Hello All,

I'm a previous 3.0d owner, looking to get back into an X5 and I've  been giving this car some serious thought.

(E53 X5 4.8is for sale at Cooper BMW Durham). 

Any opinions on what this is worth? It's a great vehicle, but does it have the status of something like an E39 M5 to justify the price?

I've done the usual - CAP, Glasses, Parkers, WBAC etc. and I keep coming back with £11.5k at best as a retail price. Even adding £1k on for the value of a BMW warranty doesn't get near the asking price.
I can't find any other main dealer cars for sale - does anyone know the asking price of any comparable recent cars being sold by Hexagon?

Can this car really be worth £17k, and what do you think is the future of these things?

£17k also puts it very close the the E70's. Which would be the better buy?

in a word no, yes its very low milage but milage doesnt mean trouble free, just as many problems come with age to which it is 8 yrs, dont know where abouts your at to be looking at a car in durham but i saw a le mans blue 4.8is at a dealer in hartlepool for £8495, i would go with that and sit the the other £8.5k in the bank, i would say you could pick up a 4.8is from £7.5k upwards, i would agree with your wbac etc and put that car at 11k max

The te a lot if money for what it is. Nice options and very low mileage but as above. Bushes etc will still be drying out even if not used. Personally don't like really low mileage cars as the can tbh have just as many issues as one with high miles.

Your logic is spot on.
I'd say that is at least £5k too high.
Warranty is worth a little over £1k.
As others have pointed out, age is as much a factor as mileage - rubber does start to perish.
Mine had a sticker price of £19k four years ago with 28k!
On every measure this price is wrong.
I would simply offer Glasses retail + £1k and see what happens.

Thats properly overpriced. It wont be flying off their forecourt.

At that age BMW warranty will be some £1700 to renew.

I had one for 3 years and easily did £20 K+ on it in work.........

Its nice but comfort seats dont go with that car IMHO. With nappa you need the bolsters that the sport seats have. You will find you slide out f the seat if you drive in a spirited fashion.

Make sure the recalls have been done........there was an issue with valve tronic levers on these cars.

I wouldnt pay a penny over £13 K for that and thats if i really really really wanted it.

These days, Large V8 Petrol are more offered than the proverbial rattle snake in the lucky dip.

I love the looks of these and the performance, but mine broke my heart. Far too many issues and the bills are huge.

Warranty is mileage linked usually so won't be that expensive so they can't really use that as an excuse for the asking price.

Go look at it test/scrutinise it make sure you really really want and offer them a figure your happy with just for instance 11k you never no they will probably tell you to do one (in a polte way) then walk out if you  can wait you never no.

There won't be that many about at main dealers any more as they are 2006 and earlier cars, so not really main dealer stock any longer. Hexagon had some lovely examples in their day, I paid 25K for mine 3+ years ago from them, probably overpriced then even but I love the car and it has served me well so far. I would never sell for the measly 8.5K quoted by Shadrack and I am sure Raj won't be selling his anytime soon either LOL.

They are massive money pits if they have not been correctly maintained though, and sometimes even if they have been, things can go wrong. At this stage in their lives, they may have gone through numerous owners, wanting a big beast but without the cash to maintain it correctly and hence moving it on when issues develop.  The BMW warranty is great, I still maintain mine although not sure how much longer I will do so - particularly as things like the pano roof can be £3000 to replace and electric mirrors at £750 a pop.  Not to mention the auto box.......or the air suspension, parking sensors etc etc etc. all these things get old with the car and electronics can degrade and fail while just stood doing nothing.  Very low mileage on a high powered older car is a slight worry, actually.

I also agree that comfort seats are not the right choice on this model, but thats just a personal view. 

I love my 4.8is it is a very special, good looking car and I maintain it as per BMW recommendations full main dealer service etc.  I also really do not care about the fuel consumption as life is too short for that!  Its a lot better than driving some oil burning crock of wotsit (ducks missiles) and actually, as I manage to get 24mpg average, its not that far off the 3.0D figures either!

I would say that one is optimistically priced and unlikely to sell - probably worth a try if you really like it, but the comfort seats would put me off right away.

Interesting what Condor says. I had mine from 21K and I cant remember how many it had when i sold it, 58 or 63 something like that.
All sorts of things went wrong.
Suspension at least twice + the compressor and numerous bushes.
Sat nav..............the entire system replaced.
Valvetronic levers.
Pan roof.
Mirrors several times.
Cd player.
Air bag issues twice.
Steering leaks .
Autobox eventually replaced.
Tailgate.
Rear Lights.
In the end it just became a pain in the arse.

Someone earlier compared the 4.8 to an E39 M5

I can report that I have had am E39 M5 for 10 years, it has done nearly 130 K and aside from an apetite for thermostats it has not missed a beat.
Preventative measures have been taken and I replace things like sensors periodically in the interest of it being hastle free.

I can tell you it cost more to run / maintain the 4.8 over 3 years than the M5 over 10. That tells you everything you need to know.

So , much as I loved it, as they say...............  I wouldnt touch it with yours. At my age I am far more interested in driving the thing than to ing and fro ing back to the dealer every week.
Id almost be tempted to buy a 4.4 V8 , change the arches and wheels and be happy. There is only 40 bhp in it and you can always have it chipped. Its a far more reliable car.

I agree with this too, I purchased my old TVR as a one owner car with only 12k miles on it at 8 years old & it needed a rebuild at 19k miles! 

I tend not to go for really low miles now I prefer ones that have done average miles & get used regularly, but I still love to see really low miles as they are usually mint cars cosmetically.

I knew the previous owner of this car and if it helps it is/was out of the box!! I bought a brand new set of 17" winter wheels and tyres off him last winter. He bought them thinking they would fit his car  :blink:

He loved and cherished the car like a baby

I never said 8.5k to offend anyone but ive seen them going for even less with high miles.  Im always looking at prices and lately e53s have taken a massive hit even in derv burning models. Early petrols are turning up at under 3K.

Nice car but Definitely overpriced, when you drive it off the forecourt and want to sell it back to them 5 minutes later they would offer you a lot less, and I don't want to upset you but I would guess near the figure Shadrack said as trade figure.  :cry1:

For 17k you can get an E70 petrol one and even possibly a high mileage diesel one and the value of cars is on the reg year and mileage and condition. The prices of E70 and E53 will continue to drop due to the latest X5 coming out push them down.

The other thing to bear in mind is if its a petrol it will possibly more difficult to sell later due to the fuel consumption and so may be worth less over the diesel, but it depends on your usage and your budget.

For me i use it as a weekend toy for 2,000 miles a year and so it was better to go petrol than diesel and save the extra purchase price money and put it against the fuel as I'm likely to only have the car for a few years and the extra cost against better fuel consumption did not stack up in my case. Plus you get the V8 sound which is nicer than a diesel sound to me.
