which e-reader

Post by PhilT » Wed Nov 24, 2010 8:31 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to buy an e-reader for the kitchen-slave for Christmas and am unsure as to which one to go for. I'm leaning towards an Amazon Kindle as the moment as it seems like the most popular option but was also considering an ipad (maybe too heavy for an e-reader?). Also notice in the ipad thread that a couple of people have Sony e-readers - not even considered these so may be another option.

Any advice or recomendations?
Cheers
Phil.

Ok, I have the Sony as well as the iPad.

Ipad would tire your eyes too much and battery lasts 10 hours, the e-reader is weeks on a battery so that is much nicer. Also, it is less tiring on the eyes I think.

The real choices are only the Kindle one and the e-reader. Go to a book store and try both, you will just know what you prefer.

I've got a Sony PRS-550 which I really love - its got a special cover with a light in, the screen is easy on the eye and it is much more flexible than Kindle as it can read PDFs and all sorts of other formats while you are stuck with Kindle just to Amazon stuff. But its really a personal choice.
I would advise though - don't go for an Argos cheapie unknown brand, I've heard of a lot of problems with the cheapie readers. Stick with Sony or a Kindle or an ipad (not really a dedicated ebook reader, but nice all the same!)

I'd be tempted with the iPad, but it's quite expensive for a paperweight! Of course it can do more things than a kindle reader - if you want it for other things. Also, it CAN be brighter than the kindle, which is useful fir those who's eyesight isn't so great.
