X5 and off road ability

The key issue for me would be safety. The chances of hitting another car, human or animal is significantly higher than the UK. You want something as big, solid and heavy as possible.

Geezer - you indicate cost is a factor at 20k so maybe look at older models or the shogun and Nissan patrol suggestions from those who have run these cars in demanding environments.

Unless the driver is a competent mechanic with spares in the trunk I would always buy whatever is durable, reliable & that locals can fix just in case of issues............as mentioned already something that can run on mixed quality fuel.

Needless to say I wouldn't take a 4.6is there - this for all reasons mentioned......gearbox and suspension woes just 2 factors of concern

Landcruiser without doubt if you need to carry people, otherwise a Hilux.

They are simply indestructible and easily fixed.

They're both quite agricultural to drive, nothing like an X5 but they'll certainly do the business in Africa.

AW8, at £20k that would probably be at the top of my budget, as I'd then have to consider shipping etc. But it would also be a one time only purchase so I wouldn't mind stretching myself.

Any thoughts on the long wheelbase version Vs the smaller 'Prado' version?

I have not owned any of the vehicles discussed.

In your shoes my decision would be primarily based on.....

Reliability reputation.

Mechanical condition.

Spares availability, (relative to area operating in).

Your technical abilities & realistic expectations of any servicing staff & "bush mechanics"

How far are likely to travel from Niarobi. 

Fuel quality/availability in area of intended use.

I would seek advice of those whose opinions I value........... Within this context I would ideally speak to colleagues in Niarobi who can genuinely speak with conviction re suitable vehicles.  I would seriously take advice from CondorX5 also.

It's not about having the best car.......it's about having one that can be worked on when there.
