First ever X5

Good evening,

Just changed my 57 Reg 635D today for a 2010 X5 3.5D, sad to see the 6 go but family needs sometimes have to take priority especially with the winter looming ever quicker. Having driven the 6 hard it has averaged over the last 31 months at 34.8 mpg which i thought was fantastic, having said my good byes and driven the X5 home reasonably steadily it is returning 25.9.....OMG what have i done? Having done some research before i bought it i was expecting to get average around 33 mph according to statistics. This is my 5th BMW and have never thought about remapping but could do with a bit of advice on the best option here, i am not looking specifically for more torque as i feel for a big car it moves well but this MPG i was not expecting. Any advice from any one would be most welcome. Regards Martin

I think whilst you expectations based on official figures were conservative, in reality they're unrealistic!

I have a 40d which is supposed to have better mpg and I've found I get 22mpg when doing short journeys and recently since I've been doing more motorway driving (into London averaging 50mph) I've been getting 31mpg. 

That said, I looked at the savings i would get per year based on the millage I do if I got a car capable of 40mpg and it wasn't significant enough to warrant a change.

I suspect the pay back on a remap would be a year or two unless your doing serious miles.

Hi and welcome.

Your mpg expectations are very high.  The X is a heavy brick and will really struggle to get anywhere near the official figures.  Remember these are achived on rolling roads and are not a realistic figure.  I believe the 35d had the six speed box, and if that's so, then mid to high 20s maybe a more realistic figure.  Your driving style will have a big impact on the mpg and driving it like you stole it will easy see a return in the teens.

Should add, if you've got the 20" wheels, changing the tyres makes the mpg insignificant!

I just had to change all 4 and it cost be the best part of £1500

BMW & Mini (amongst too many other manufacturers) both have serious problems with their stated and real consumption figures.  Unfortunately the X5/X6 35d seems to be amongst the worse with a difference of between 15 & 30%.  Our Mini is supposed to return 65mpg but we never get better than 42mpg no matter how carefully it is driven.  My X6 should return 35mpg but varies between 28 and 32mpg.

When queried, BMW simply state the official figures are under EU approved test conditions and the DfT says that the figures are only for 'comparative circumstances' and may not reflect those found during real world conditions.  Part of the problem for UK drivers is the tests are carried out on a rolling road and at 20C - hardly representative of the UK weather.

Roll on the arrival of the new 'realistic' tests from 2015 onwards - assuming all parties can agree.

Some corners of both Gov't and Industry are shy of changing things because it will show the current crop of Carbon emission controls to be the joke they really are......

I agree with all the above regarding unrealistic official fuel consumption figures.
That said, I have a 2010 35d and I get around 30mpg with a fair proportion of that 'around town'.  On longer journeys on motorway-type roads that increases to closer to 35mpg.
Those figures get worse in winter though.

Maybe get it diagnostic scanned to check all is well car health wise other than that maybe ensure it has clean filters etc and accept you will have to drive slower to compensate for aerodynamics albeit the weight is an ever present issue - e70 official figures seem to vary significantly from real world mpg not least due to wind resistance

Hi and welcome.

I had my 635d remapped to 350hp + 100 more torques, best thing i ever done, plus 32 - 40mpg..

My X535d is also remapped, as i was disappointed with the fuel economy. And i'd say it was worth it just for the extra performance alone. And i'm now getting between 26 - 34mpg at a steady 70mph.

Hello & welcome, the mpg used to surprise me on my old one they are just big heavy beasts but I still love them & everytime I see an X5 I always think the owners must be made of money as they are heavy on running costs but I still lust after them loads.

OP how on earth did you get 34.8mpg in a 635d?!

I had the 2010 635d with all that "efficient dynamics" stuff on that model year (closing grille flaps when engine cold, charges battery from brake energy regeneration, updated wing mirrors with less air drag, etc) and I got around 25mpg tops, and that was driving it reasonably hard on a mixed journey to and from work every day (about half town, half highway).

I did love using the "SPORT" button though.
