It is a contentious subject because the 4.8iS is an immense machine but you can argue that a big engined petrol 4x4 in this country is a tricky decision with the price of fuel & the torque delivery of the 3.0d really suits that type of car.

When I ran my 4.8iS I had my TVR Cerbera 4.5 aswell & I didn't mind throwing petrol at the TVR because it rewarded you with epic performance but the 4.8iS used miles more fuel but didn't offer the same thrills so it used to grate a little for me.

Don't get me wrong because me & the mrs both miss the X5 it's a special motor that I was very proud to own but the 3.0d does make the better allrounder imo.

If money wasn't an object though I would have another in a flash.

I've owned both.
3.0d was the better all-rounder but I love the 4.8iS.
It is all down to numbers.
The miles per gallon figures are closer in practice than you might think - in my case 21-22 vs 28.
Boils down to your mileage vs purchase cost.
When I bought mine, diesels were £4-5k more like-for-like.
However I do less than 4k a year and I like the V8.
If I was driving to work, I would have stuck with the diesel.

There is a big difference in the factory figures for the performance, the 4.8 being a fair bit quicker but i don't know how this translates in the real world the torque figure is the same for both motors but the 4.8 has a lot more Bhp.

We need to set up a drag race to put this to bed!!  8)

I've had facelift 3.0d and facelift 4.4 and in the midrange there's not a lot in it but revving the petrol car out at higher speeds leaves the diesel in the dust IMHO. The 4.8 will be faster still.

On the 4.4 I get 20mpg average 24/25 motorway , on the diesel it was 28 average but up to 33 on the motorway.

The 4.8is has a much higher top speed and the extra rpm available will make it the quicker car both by book and on the road.  In my view Raj has already won........but then again all those mods and dinner plate wheels may drag him back.. O:-)

Now of course a 40d would leave him dead...... >:D >:D

It's a very interesting comparison with 40D.
I decided to keep my 4.8iS three years ago until a diesel SUV of similar size came out that could match it for performance ( so in effect at least 300 bhp), was under 225g CO2 (for tax) and (this is the tricky bit) I could get at least 50% better on the MPG (to part justify depreciation).
I've been looking at the 40D, Cayenne S Diesel and Audi SQ5.
All make my first two criteria but I've been reading mixed reviews on mpg for all and yet to be convinced.

My reason for choosing the V8 over the derv is that there's a 3-4k price difference, on top of the fact most of the D's have high mileage which may increase cost of ownership due to repairs, and for the amount of miles I do, it would take me longer than I'll probably keep the car for to see the saving from fuel economy. Also the sound...!

I'm always up for it LOL.

I did a little drag against my mates RR Sport Supercharged in my E60 M5. Always new the outcome but was an interesting first few metres until the M gets into it's stride lol

The mods will only help lol. Exhaust helps free things up a little along with the remap. The coil overs help to keep the X more stable and are lighter than the original air suspension. Brakes will be lighter to and the wheels are again lighter than the OE 20's for example so help with unsprung weight. All in all.... 8)
