Urgent Advice Needed!!

Post by PhilUK » Wed Sep 11, 2013 3:33 pm

The X is off the road. Nooooooooo!!

Yesterday, 10 minutes into a 3 hour journey (it never happens when you set out to the shops does it) I had the Fuel Inj warning light pop up on the dash and then noticed a distinct lack of power as if the turbo wasn't kicking in. Then came the stink of escaping diesel and a murky mess spraying up onto the rear window. Time to pull over me thinks!

As I stopped so did the engine, presumably through lack of fuel as I soon noticed a trail of the stuff up the road after getting out to investigate. After hastily removing wife and child to a safe distance I called the AA and waited, and waited, and waited! Anyway, long story short it was 5 hours before the X was eventually put onto the recovery truck and on its way to my local garage.  :(

My regular mechanic is no X5 expert and was a little cautious after locating the source of the leak which appears to be from a faulty gasket between the fuel pump that is attached to the engine and a small block that is attached to the side of the fuel pump with four bolts/screws.

Can anyone advise if this gasket is available separately or does this mean a complete replacement fuel pump (mega money I know) and also is this repair a simple one or will a regular mechanic struggle?

Cheers in advance chaps  ;)

Not good, and not good from the AA either.. >:(

Have you had a look at REALOEM to see if the part is listed as a separate item?

Hi Richard,

I have but it doesn't appear to be listed on realoem.

That said it is easy to bring up the wrong image.

This is the one I found, not sure if it is the correct one for the fuel pump on a 2003 3.0d?

If mechanic doesn't seem to have any idea and realoem not helping then I suggest you find a good Indy in absence of the two of you failing to sort matters thus far. In long run it may work out cheaper and less hassle.

Whilst I have done some parts research when cars have needed work at home or with garage/dealer/Indy before , the lack of confidence suggests  you should think carefully before spending out with this guy.

I appreciate your cautious approach but he is a very accomplished mechanic, just a little hesitant to embark on a job that he hasn't carried out before hence my question of what may be involved so I can decide weather to let him loose on it or not.  :)

Hi

Apart from the control valve on the back of the pump its a sealed unit, you cannot buy any other parts from BMW.

The pump removal will need a special tool to hold the gear driven by the timing chain in place when the pump is removed.

Its not a massive job but needs the correct tool to do it and previous experience would be advisable I would say.

How sure are you its leaking from the plate on the side of the pump , are the pipes all ok ?

if it defiantly is the pump leaking you could always see if it can be overhauled by a specialist if its only a leak , would be cheaper than a new pump.

Good luck

Soz to hear your problems.
Always timed right aren't they..

I had the pipes leak on that bit once but new clips sorted that.
i dont think you can get a new gasket for that block, at least cant find on Realoem.

perhaps removing it and seeing the material then fabricating a new one may be an option??
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...

But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)
