battery light stays on

Post by fatladandy » Sun Sep 08, 2013 7:23 pm

Hi guys,

Been out in the x5 today and when i started the car the battery light stayed on until i blipped the throttle. It did this everytime i started the car. On the last occasion i left it idling to see if it went off on its own and until i set off it remained on.

I have not tested the alternator as yet as my meter is in work. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

How old is the car and then the battery? That's usually why the battery light will stay on - check the age.

It could also be the alternator output is too low.  That would be a regulator pack most likely.  Go with the battery first as Sanj suggests.  If it's more than 5 years old, or has been allowed to go flat a few times then it may well need a change.

Any loose connections on it?

The light is normally kept off by the alternator charge rate exceeding the power consumption of the vehicle.  If the 'balance' shifts to the battery discharge rate exceeding the alternator output then the light comes on.

I will check the connections tonight. I will also get my meter on it too.
