New Speakers added to X5

Post by johnsorg » Sun Sep 08, 2013 2:50 pm

OK...So i have now completed the change over of my 2 x front and 2 x rear sparkers. I have also disconnected the front tweeters in the dash as these were affecting the quality of the new speakers i had brought when i was trying to set them all up.......

I'm going to post some pictures on here because people were really helpful in answering the questions i had when i decided to change the speakers.....so Thanks!

Some important points:
1st: I read some posts on here, watched some youtube videos, looked at bevariumsound website and basically all the info is there!
2nd: I also brought some interior trim removal tools from Ebay, really cheap think i paid £6 for them and they were priceless! Used them loads of times to remove the panels, switches etc and didn't scratch a single thing!!
3rd: I brought some plastic trim studs that hold the trim in place. Again, brought these cheap of Ebay and used about 19 of them! Some may have broke when i removed the door trim, lots were missing and some broke while re-fitting the trim. Well worth having some spares to hand to fit the trim.
4th: Brought some speaker fittings from Ebay, again used lots of them for connecting the speaker cables together
5th: Took notes and pictures of everything! Make sure you know how it all goes back together!!

After reading some posts on speakers and visiting the speaker shop in Great Yarmouth i decided to go with the following:
Focal K2 Power 165KR 160w for the fronts
Hertz Coax ECX 165 140w for the rear

The next few steps were reasonably easy.....
1 Remove the interior trim silver panels, remove the airbag badge, remove the window switches
2 Remove the 4 x screws that hold the trim to the door (hex shaped screws)
3 Remove the bottom interior light and disconnect so you dont trap the cables
4 Remove the door panel - can be a real pain but abit of wriggling and lifting over the central door fitting and it soon comes off. Be carfeul to not pull the panel away before you release the door catch and the small light which lights up the interior door handle.

Then........(All the door panels/speakers are the same!)
5 Remove the speaker housing - 3 x screws
6 Remove the speaker from the housing- takes abit of bashing and persuasion with a screw driver but you'll get there!
7 I then had to modify the housing to enable my speakers to fit....
8 I also had to drill a hole in the door panel to allow 2 x screws to go in a hold the speaker cross-over in place....all very straight forward!

How Do i Upload photos?

Front passenger door did not have any housing for the tweeter to go in!!
Image

Simple wire used to hold in place and then i filled with a rubber mating behind the tweeter before replacing the cover. Seems to have worked ok!
Image

Connectors used to connect to the speakers......

Tweeter went in much easier in the drivers side! The housing was still there behind the cover!

Rear door speakers.......

I used speaker connectors on all the speakers, marked up each of the cables to ensure the '+' went into the positive connection. It was all pretty simple once you complete the first one!!

Hope these pictures help!

Out of interest, why did you  choose different makes for the front and rear speakers?

I wanted to buy some decent front speakers that had tweeters, hence I got the focals. The rears didn't really need to be as good, just needed to have a good all round sound and some bass. The Hertz gave me this for a reasonable price. I had a listen to both in the shop and decided they sounded really good.

Just need to get a bass set up in the boot!!! :)
