Occasional Gear Problem selecting D or R from P
Occasional Gear Problem selecting D or R from P
Two weeks into our new ownership of a 2008 E70 M Sport, our first X5, we seem to be experiencing occassional problems selecting D or R from park. The car first selects D or R as applicable but then immediately jumps back into P by itself before moving. Car has only done it 3 times so far. We know that we have to push down the brake pedal and hold the switch on the side of the gear selector, and the fact that D or P are initially engaged suggests we are doing it right.
Any suggestions on what is happening here.....is it us - are we doing something wrong...anyone else experienced anything similar?
Thanks in anticipation

Is one of the doors open when you do it? The car will not let you shift from park,if one if the doors is open. It will bong at you and show a yellow car on the dash with a left and right arrow.

A good suggestion ....but the car will still allow me to engage D or R from P and drive off with both drivers door open and seat belt unfastened.

How odd, my 57 plate E70 throws a shit fit if you try to move it with a door open. It will let ou select D or R but puts it straight backin to park.

Hi,
Quote........" A good suggestion ....but the car will still allow me to engage D or R from P and drive off with both drivers door open and seat belt unfastened."
really............? Im not doubting you, but that should not be possible. It should " Park " itself if you have a door open. Was one of my bug bears about the E70, solved by top view camera.
I think you may have a gearbox software issue.

Nat.

How interesting!
Is a gearbox software reset possible as a DIY job (I know you can sometimes do these sort of things by various combinations of actions) or is this a job for the stealers?

Doh....wondered when that one was going to get asked!
I'm talking of being able to move forwards / backwards a few feet on the drive
