New windscreen cost

Post by ITBarbie » Fri Aug 30, 2013 8:31 pm

Hello

As PVR (my BFF) already knows I am looking to replace my windscreen  and I was enquiring about the disparity with the generic versus OEM screen.

I am insured with swift (yes I know I am a cheap skate! lol) and they make it clear that they supply a generic screen and all you have to stump up is the £65 excess.

Well I enquired about the cost difference for an OEM screen and I have been informed that they can supply a genuine BMW screen at the cost of £255.57 + vat :o

I have had the original repaired last year and TBH it was not the best.  I'm leaning towards a generic screen at £65 excess as I can't help thinking this is a car nearly 10 years old but thought I would ask for advice.  Is it really worth it and will it really affect a possible sale as I am considering upgrading next year?

I only fitted OEM on mine on the two occasions needed (and no christening was involved shadrack!!) because the car was under warranty and BMW played rough about non OEM parts.

The 'generic' screen was a Pilkington and the OEM Semperit.  The one thing you need to watch is that they get the right screen.  Auto Windscreens turned up to change mine (before I got BMW involved) and it had the wrong shaped auto wiper/headlight detector (rounded corners instead of square) so the fitter scraped the one off the broken screen and tried to fit it to the replacement.  It didn't work!  At that point I asked BMW about it and got told to fit OEM 'or else'!  Aviva paid out the £700 for each screen + fitting with no issues.

Was that a sensible reply...... O:-)

Are your legs that long they reach from the back seat?

You get so many stone chips these days that I can't see the point on spending the extra.
