DSP retrofit?

Post by grantsmtih82 » Thu Aug 22, 2013 8:06 pm

can this be done in a E53  that has nav/tv/bluetooth?  would prewiring be there for it to be plug in play? or would i need to get / install the correct wiring looms?

Yes it can be done . E53 X5`s are not pre wired for DSP and will require the correct wiring harness to be
installed to acheive this. I also have nav,tv,bluetooth and will be doing this retrofit to mine soon.

Is the wiring harness something that can be got from BMW ? Plug n play?
Does it involve removing loads if trim and running cable throughout
The car?  Also other than the harness is it just the dsp amp I need
Or is their subwoofers etc that go with it?

The audio and nav wiring harness can possibly be had from BMW parts dept but i guess
it will not come cheap, got mine from a breakers yard and is 100% plug and play.

The wiring harness runs from the rear (cargo area) along the n/s of the car and to each A and B pillars for speaker connections along and up from the centre console to the head unit, yes i guess a whole lot of trim will need to be removed for this retrofit.

You will need

1) Audio and nav wiring harness with DSP and subwoofer connections
2) DSP amplifier
3) Subwoofer x1  (rear O/S  cargo area)
4) 10 x 8ohm speakers/tweeters.
5) Rear door cards will need the holes cut out for the rear mids (already marked out at the rear)
6) Fixings for amplifier and subwoofer
7) Time and patience

My non DSP setup currently has 2 x 8ohm dash tweeters and 4 x 4ohm door speakers.
I dont think programming will be required but will cross that bridge once complete .

oh wow  thats a really big job.. i did notice some E53 had a subwoofer unit in the opposite cargo holder to the nav unit (just under the fuses)  i bet with the sub active it transforms the sounds audio inside the car...

how many speakers should be on the rear door  card?  i think i have 10 speakers
2 front dash  (one each side)
2 tweeters near the side mirrors (one each side)
2 on drivers/passenger door (one on each door)
the rear door cars have 2 speakers on each

so dsp systems have 12 speakers?

where about are you based XMAN?  where did you source your harness from?

DSP have 12.  2 are the subs in the boot so you have the right number of door speakers.

I'd personally go aftermarket. A lot of work for DSP but I'd just add an aftermarket amp/sub to your existing system.

Raj. True aftermarket would prob sound better but would like to keep it all oem.  Just need to find wiring harness
Is there a quick way to tell if my harness is 100% not wired for it.  Quick way to tell?

Also did all dsp come with the subs or were subs yet another option?

Yep part of the stock dsp system and it has an 8 or 9 pin connector that comes from the dsp amp.

I have it spare because I removed it when I beefed it up the bass, here's my post,

As you need the amp and wiring I'd personally go with a box in the OE DSP location and hidden aftermarket amp. Just my opinion.
