Rear Air Bags & Child Seats!!

Help!  I can't find my e70 manual.  Are there Air Bags in the rear of the X5 ?  and how do you disable them?  JUst had a horrible thought that I've been driving around with airbags active!!

Depends upon whether the option was fitted and they are 'curtain' type which deploy along the windows downwards from the headlining.  There are no rear seat airbags as such.  You can't deactivate them but they should be no risk to children as they only fire in side impacts - which is when you might really need one to work.

There was a version that fired a very flat disc shaped bag from the side of the rear seats along the door card, but this was side impact only, and a separate one deployed from the fronts too, but I think that they have now all been replaced by the side curtain.  I know my E53 had 'airbag' labels front and rear, but the later versions (E70/71) only have them in the roof lining.  I specced rears for mine as this added a rear curtain.

If you have side door airbags you'll have a little badge stating it on the doorcard. They fire an airbag up the side so not dangerous for children in the rear.
