Hello from a newbie

Post by scratchpole » Sat Aug 17, 2013 12:17 pm

This is my first post on Xdrivers and thought I should start by introducing myself before asking numerous questions about the problematic X5 I have recently acquired.

As my profile, I am not new to BMWs so thought I knew all about them and wouldn't have any problem finding a good X5. Would attach some pictures of it if I new how but maybe I'm not allowed to yet until I have built up a "good posting" history?

Had the X5 for about six weeks now and still getting used to the hard suspension (maybe should not have gone for the Sport but I preferred the interior / steering wheel). We traveled down to Devon for a wedding the other week and had no problems with the running of the car but did wonder if I should have opted for a 4.4 litre rather than the 3.0 - however it does keep me in check as with my other car, a Volvo V70 T5, I do seem to go at speeds that are frowned upon!

Have been reading the many useful posts on this site and when I get time I will add a couple of my own observations on how to (or perhaps how NOT to). Have been doing my own maintenance for many years (started with push bikes at school, then motorbikes and then moved on to cars because they kept you dry when it rained and you couldn't fall off them). Most of my experience is from the carburettor/distributor & points type era so all this OBDII / CANBUS stuff is a mystery to me, but I am learning.

Great site and very useful, guys. Hope I can contribute something.

Hello and  :hi:

No problem with pics as anyone can post them, but you have to do it via an external photo site.  One method is here.

Thanks for that Richard. I have an account but haven't used it for a while so need to load up my pictures.

Well, here we go with a picture at last (I hope):

Image

Only the one at the moment as my photobucket account is still playing up.

Not had the car long and it drives great with no problems with engine or transmission (and brakes work as well apart from a message about checking the linings - which I have done several times; are you listening X5?

Several jobs to be done which should empty my wallet quite quickly such as rusted  brake pipes, coding of keys after a flat battery and a tyre wearing very fast making me think something is out of alignment. Like another poster said, this is a love / hate relationship.

Thanks for all the welcomes so far.

Thanks for the welcome. Now managed to sort out pictures (click on the one above and you can view the others). Turned that my pc had the Delta Search virus which is quite common apparently.
