I generally prise the dashboard apart very carefully with a fork, then I can grab the edge of the menu and pull it out.  However, you could always just check the takeaway's number on Google and call them up without bothering to do this.........

does this work ?

I followed the link, printed the advice but I cannot get into the 'hidden menu' on my E53 !!

Press and hold right button - done
Test Nr.01 - done
press left get chassis - done (added up also comes to 22, a '0' is zero and not 'ten' when adding up isnt it ?)
press right till I get to Nr.19 - done
press left - lock off, lock on lock 00, 01,02,03 upto relevent 22 (matching chassis) - done
press right for hidden menu - FAILURE, I just get 'Nr.01' again

Tried in with key in position 2, and with ignition on

What am I doing wrong ?

Well this link is for E38 7 series , but E53 does have the hidden OBC menu too , all BMW's do , but it's slightly different to get into each model I think .

Try this version ;

2 buttons/pins on the speedo one resets the mileage counter (left) and the other to alternate the obc view (right)

1. Press and hold right button till u get TEST NR 01
2. Press left button
3. Add up all the numbers this is your unlock code. Example 26131=13
4. think right takes u back to TEST-NR 01
5. Press right till u get too TEST NR 20 then left
6. Get locked message hit left till u reach ur unlock code then right
7. Goto TEST NR-09 and hit left

Hope it works

Re: hidden menu

I did try it yesterday with the engine running (wary of playing with electrics while engine is off as I think the battery is failing, hence the reason to view the hidden menu battery setting)

I got as far as:
5. Press right till u get too TEST NR 20 then left

I got to NR 20, pressed left and I got no locked message but got:
KVER1000 which counted 'down'.... so I switched the ignition off

I will try again with the ignition in position 2
