Cruise control lights X5 E70 MY10

Post by rafikibob » Mon Jul 29, 2013 2:40 pm

Hi,
Hope you can help. I have an AUC MY10 X5 M Sport Auto Xdrive35d and I think I have a problem, but don't know for sure.
I have dynamic cruise control on a separate lever and I expected when the system is active that the light on the little slider around the speedo turns green. It doesn't on mine.
It momentarily comes up saying the speed is set but the light stays red. It's working ok otherwise.
If I brake the light doesn't change.
If I deactivate it completely it slides back round.

My dealership says it's working as it should but to me, there is now no indication at all that the system is active and that the car will accelerate.

Am I being BSd here? Anyone have similar that can confirm? Light just never goes green and they seem to be saying "they don't.".....My E60 did. Surprised if they changed it to a system that doesn't tell you when it's active.
Cheers,
Rob

Do you mean 'active' cruise control with the radar, or the normal 'adaptive' cruise control with brake assist?

I have the standard adaptive cruise control on mine and I get a deep orange LED when it's 'Armed' and a green LED when it's active.  If I touch the brakes it goes to Amber, the same happens if I flick the lever up or down.  The car speeds up when I push the lever forwards and slows down (and uses the brakes) if I pull it towards me.  Two up or down flicks turns the system off.

I thought a 'Red' LED was a system fault.  It could indicate that the sensor under the front bumper needs cleaning too.

Thanks fella, i'm not sure it's even red to be honest. I don't think it lights up at all, just picks up the faint red of the cluster lights. It certainly doesn't go green and i'm fairly sure it should.
I have adaptive, i.e braking downhill or round corners.

Yours is an 11? (Can't see your sig now i'm replying). It's very unlikely they changed it for 10 and then changed it back again. My dealership are just bs'ing me aren't they.

It does sound like something isn't right.  As soon as you push the lever forward the light should go green and move around the speedo to the selected speed, and the selected speed will also appear in the instrument cluster.

At least that's what it does on my MY11.

I've had a 2004 E60, a 2007 E90 and now a 2010 E70 35d all with the 'standard' cruise control.  The speed indicator hasn't been illuminated differently to the rest of the instrument cluster on any of those three vehicles.  Set the speed (or resume the speed) and the indicator swings clockwise around the speedometer to the set speed (but doesn't change colour).  Press the brake or disengage the cruise and the indicator swings anticlockwise out of sight.

My one on a dec 2012 does turn green when activated or remains orange when you have selected a speed and are not using it.

I guess the owners manual might give a definitive answer, but I can say for sure that on my (Canadian sourced) 2010 E70 35d the indicator does not change colour, and it behaves exactly like my previous 2 UK sourced cars with the same cruise control option.  (cruise with brake assist but not the 'radar-assisted' vesrion).
The speed setting numbers in the dash display only show(ed) in red on all three cars as well - maybe this changed on later models(?)

Just one other thing I should mention.  As I've said previously the speedo cruise indicator swings anticlockwise out of sight whenever the brake is pressed or the system is disengaged from the control stalk (up or down movement of stalk).

There was a short period though when this didn't happen.  I'd taken the car in for some work (a recall if I remember correctly) and when I got it back the cruise indicator stayed on the speedo if I braked; effectively showing you what speed the car would go back to on 'resume'.  Although I liked this it was a change and I asked the dealer about it.  They said "that's not right" so I took the car back in and they changed it back to the way it was before.

I believe I mentioned this on Xdrivers at the time but nobody else responded so I assumed everybody's speedometer 'cruise indicators' diasappear when either brake or disengage is pressed.

Nope, just the light going from green to orange.  It only moves to it's rest position if disengaged by two up/down flicks of the stalk.  As long as I'm doing more than 20kph then pressing the 'Resume' button causes the indicator to change back to green and the car to accelerate back to the set speed.  Checked coming back up the M4 from Wales today.

Perhaps US/Canadian spec are different?

Possibly, or it could be a change introduced in a different model year (Both mine and the OP's car are 2010 models).  Mine disengages (and indicator moves to rest position) with a single up or down movement of the stalk.  That's exactly as per the manual and exactly how my UK 2004 and 2007 cars worked as well.
Mystery!

I have a 2007 (57) E70 and it only has a white cruise control indicator that shows the speed when the cruise is active. It disappears when the cruise isn't active.
