Birch 4x4 - automatic gearbox rebuild

Post by DougieV8 » Fri Jul 26, 2013 3:24 pm

Picking my X5 up from this garage in Liverpool tomorrow - I hope to be singing their praises soon

The gearbox on mine has had slip in reverse for 18 months or so, originally this was occassional but could be brutal if it suddenly slammed in producing whiplash and extremely scary reverse speed. More recently reverse has been virtually non existent and a slight judder had appeared in forward gears.

All sorted now with a nice 12 month peace of mind warranty :) I live in Central Scotland but chose this garage after calling around many others - I felt confident in their ability through advert and telephone conversations and was really impressed with pricing.

Have they done a full gearbox rebuild? How much out if interest? And glad it's hopefully sorted.

Fingers crossed all went well today.  Also interested in costs and how the work fairs after all the trouble you have had.

Picked up yesterday - lovely smooth gear changes and a working reverse! cannot even feel a selection bump when going into reverse :)

I was advised that oil was very black but no metal fragments, piston seals gone and clutches deteriorating - £1100 all in. Torque converter ok.

A very capable garage and good guys which makes all easier. Impressed by the services they offer - servicing, body shop, interior trim, 4x4 problems, gearboxes, cabriolet hoods, lpg conversions etc.

Yeah full rebuild Raj - advert says a recon box is installed but Stuart advised that although this is an option with a box available on workshop floor he preferred rebuild of original. He feels this is more advantageous as getting to root of issue and can therefore consider other problems that could have led to fail such as overheating.

So all sorted with 12 month warranty - 6 month check required for levels and diagnostic

Think that really good for full rebuild so will keep them in mind if I should ever need it.
