Gearbox and trans box fluids

Post by Johnny-p » Thu Jul 25, 2013 10:30 am

Hi all
Reading through past threads on changing transmission fluid and transfer box fluids has left me a little confused as I'm not particularly mechanically minded..
So, do both these parts share the same-ie if I change the transmission fluid then the transfer box is using this new fluid aswell???
Also how much should I be expecting to pay for this..
Sorry for sounding thick. !!!!!

Gearbox and transfer box and front diff and rear diffs are all seperate units. I paid £170 for a gearbox oil and filter change.there is a big debate if to change the gearbox oil.
Some have experienced gearbox failures due to the detergent in the new oil loosening debris lurking in the box, so causing blockages in the solenoid s and valve blocks
There is a sticker on the gearbox that tells you what oil is in there. There are several types and grades across the X5 range. As for diff and transfer box oil, I'm not sure, there was a good thread months ago where a member changed all the fluids and did a price list, maybe worth a search.

This is only a guide, as mentioned previously, different boxes, ie GM , ZF 5 speed and ZF 6 speed all use different oil, and are not interchangeable . Beware !!
