new(ish) owner unsure on the webasto

Post by bmwtransit » Fri Jul 19, 2013 10:35 pm

Hi all,
I upgraded to a 2005 3.0d facelift x5 sport this February from an absolute money pit of an E60.
I part exed it at a dealers and when i went to pick it up they shown me all the features. He pointed out the aux heating on the obc and said i can set it at certain times to open the vents and let fresh air in when it's parked up.
After having a good read through the threads on this site,i've picked up on the Webasto.
I've looked under the bonnet and i have the thermo unit
What exactly does it do? and how do i make it work?
I've gathered it's some form of heater, does it only blow hot air or will it work with the air con aswell?
I would like to see if it works because i got 12 months AUC with it.

Also what do the aux,in,out ports behind the centre console do? My son plugged his headphones into them once and all he could here was buzzing.

Thanks in advance,
Martin

It spunds as if you have mixed up aux heating with aux ventilation from the sound of it.......the aux ventilation is a bit of a gimmick in my opinion, relatively useless, while aux heating is wonderful in the winter - aka a parking heater, the webasto installed in most of the 3.0d models and only a few petrol cars, is a great addition. Only hassle for you will be to enable the aux heating function as the 3.0d did not come with the aux heating function enabled generally, the unit was used as a preheater for the glow plugs, not as a parking heater. Its a relatively cheap mod, though, from what I have read......

I am sure one of the many who have done it will come along soon.

Aux heating using the Webasto is a US spec item only........therefore not enabled generally on UK supplied vehicles.

That said it is easy to enable.
But not sure how it will stand on your AUC as will definitely not be as supplied!!!!

it is very nice to get into a nice warm and defrosted car on a winters morn

Thanks for the info guys,

Would it be a case of adapting wiring to the unit to make it work or would it just be a simple case of coding it in?

Also does anyone know what those ports are for behind the centre armrest? because i'm stumped as to what they do.

Webasto for parking heater is a coding job.
No wiring needed unless you go for the remote control, and then that is usually plug and play.

Ports behind armrest is a little trickier??
Might be  A/V into the audio system??
A photo would help.

The 2 ports/sockets in the rear on the back of the centre console on mine say AV in & AV out.

that's good to hear,i plan on getting some coding done at an indy soon for the doors to lock automatically.

What other features can be unlocked with coding on the x5?
There was quite a few on the e60

I have these these ports in my X, I have the OBC display with TV. Assume you have the same. Plugging an external sound source into the AV IN and selecting AV on TV channel puts the sound through car speakers (mono only I believe). Plugging in an external video source (e.g portable DVD player) and selecting AV will show DVD on your TV.
I have rear screens in the headrests, I have connected these to the AV OUT and can watch the TV on the rear screens. Simply put, I suppose it is an extra output for the TV.

Just in case I haven't bored you, I have a DVD player in the boot which was originally only connected to the rear screens through a junction box in the centre console. The junction box had the 2 screens plugged in and also AV OUT  ports. I got some leads and connected the box to the AV IN on the centre console so I can now see DVD on front screen.
Junction box had 2 AV IN connections so I connected the centre console AV OUT to junction box and by selecting correct source on rear screens can watch TV in the back.

The DVD player, junction box and screens are all aftermarket non BMW kit fitted by previous owner. No info with car when I bought it. Took some working out but I got there.
Got it all sorted for a trip from Cornwall to The Orkneys, then didn't use it. Never mind, nice to have it all working anyway.
Hope this helps and you understand what I am trying to say. It works in mine. Good luck!!
BTW, I think iPhones don't work too well with AV in, something to do with low power output, if this is wrong I'm sure someone will correct me. :D :D
