No sound from drivers side f+r speakers

Post by Johnny-p » Wed Jul 17, 2013 12:55 pm

Hi all
Be gentle with me, I'm new to the X5 brigade!!!
Well the story so far is I have just purchased a 2005 3.0d sport.
Metallic black
Beige leather
Pan roof
Folding mirrors
Nav/tv/cd changer
Bluetooth
Monitors in headrests/DVD/wireless headphones
Heated rear seats
109k
Now, I got this a bit cheap so was expecting a few little problems along the way.
So far, new bonnet switch as the alarm kept going off.
New windscreen as I had a big scratch in it.
A new key as it only came with one.
Had to have new valves put on all 4 wheels and rebalanced as the metal caps had siezed.
The final one to conquer is as per title, no sound from both fro t and rear drivers side speakers..
Last night I put the key in the ignition and faded the balance to the right and got sound from just the rear but even that disappeared after about 20 seconds ??? It's got me stumped..
Any ideas ??
Great forum by the way- I've gleaned loads of info so far!!!!
Cheers
John

:hi: John.

Good you  know a bit about the car - this problem is the RCM (Radio Control Module). Have a search for Rudi. He's the guy to use to fix as well as upgrade the RCM. Nearly there!

Cheers chaps I have posted this on a few bmw sites with no replies  >:(
Well, I've had the unit out tonight and had a peek inside and all looked well.
It had a bmw sticker on it dated 07/01/2010 so I presume it's either a recon unit or has been repaired by bmw at this point??
I've had a look on the dreaded eBay and see there are a few people offering a repair service.. Any opinions on this or anyone used this service??
Seems a damn site cheaper than a new one from a dealer!!!
Cheers

it is a common problem mate, the RCM/BM54 is so bad it should have been blo0dy recalled by bmw! it is so common that there are like u say repair services on ebay who guarantee a fix! u can't tell what's wrong by lookin at it, its probably one of the amp chips busted.  i did this long years back too.

back then i didn't know of a recommended repair shop. sanj has suggested one below. name 'baris' came to my mind from others recommendations - check this out.

one more thing -  i'd first try to isolate whether its a prob with your RCM or speakers before sending it out to repair. I did this by sending a small battery voltage down the speaker wires on the quad lock which connects to the RCM. each speaker responded with a crackle which told me the speakers were good, isolating the  RCM as the cause.

'Small' being from a AA type battery!  If you have a multimeter then you can do the same using the resistance setting as that puts a low voltage on the wires.

ah the multi-meter - why didn't i think of that..  :wall:

yes should have added - a mobike battery for instance might be a tad too much.. especially for a tweeter.. lol
