Post by paulrog » Mon Jul 08, 2013 8:21 pm

Hi.

New on here as i'm seriously thinking about buying a 2007-2008 X5 with the Petrol V8 engine, I know most engines have common problems so can anyone tell me what the E60 4.8 engines common problems are??

Plus what is the Dynamic pack??

Main problem is the 18 MPG >:(
I think its the N62 engine. There has been a few cases of the coolant tube in the valley pan leaking from the seal , where it enters the timing case. If you have to replace this seal with a genuine BMW part its £10 for the seal and 50 hours labour, as they have to totally strip the engine to replace the seal. There is an aftermarket kit called BMW pipe. Google it, it saves most of the labour as it can be done with the engine still in situ. Still costs about a grand to do though.
.worst case scenario, look for coolant dripping from a tell tale hole in the timing cover.
Apat from that they are pretty bulletproof. Don't dismiss the 40 D though  :)

Hi,

I spent 6 months looking for one and gave up. All I could find was early cars.  To be honest I went 40d in the end.
It really is very well suited to tha car and no noticeable difference in performance, + you can chip a 40d from the quoted 302 bhp tp 360 or more if you really want to go nuts.

Ive had 2 E53 V8's, and to be honest apart from the expansion tank on the first one, the engines were the one area that gave no trouble.

Regards

Nat.
