X5 40d M Sport - Picking her up today!!!

Post by 6bmw » Fri Jun 28, 2013 11:12 am

After 2 months of hard searching I have finally found the car with the ideal spec I was looking for! The main  things I wanted were - a Black car (Carbon or Sapphire), Panoramic roof, 333M Alloys and 7 seats - This combination is hard to find on early 2010 LCI cars but a lot of the newer 2012 onwards cars are now being registered with this spec.

Anyway - I pick her up at 3pm today and can't bloody wait :D

She is a October 2011 car with 10k on the clock, 1 Owner - 5 year service pack.

The cars spec is:

Carbon Black Metallic
M Double-Spoke Style 333M 10/11Jx20
M Sport suspension
Reversing Assist camera with Top View
Roof rails, High-gloss Shadowline
Brushed Aluminium Trim
Heating/ventilation for 3rd Seat Row
Third-row seating
Panoramic glass sunroof
Floor mats, velour
Ext. mirrors - folding, auto dimming
Elec Fr Seats + Driver Memory
Sport seats, front
Seat heating, front
Park Distance Control (PDC), front and rear
Rain sensor with auto. headlight activation
Xenon headlights
Automatic Air Conditioning
Cruise control with brake function
Extended Interior Light Package
BMW TeleServices
Control BMW TeleServices
USB audio interface
Telephone USB audio interface
Mobile application preparation
Combox controller
Navigation-system Professional
BMW Assist
Internet
BMW Apps Interface
Extended BMW online information
BMW Assist online portal
Bluetooth phone prep + telematics
DAB digital radio
Loudspeaker system - BMW Business
CD changer
M-Aerodynamic Bodystyling
M Steering Wheel
Exterior trim, High-gloss Shadowline

Looks great!  :D

The only thing I would pay extra attention to (amongst the other things you normally go over with a fine toothed come when picking up a new car...) is the wheels.

They are prone to corrosion, as the lacquer lifts off and water gets in- making a horrible mess of the bare aluminium underneath. Look carefully at each wheel- especially around the centre cap area.

Aparty from that good luck and I bet you can't wait!

Oh and  :camera: plenty of them when you do pick her up.

Thanks buddy, I'm aware of the wheels issue thanks to this forum and all four have been refurbished by the dealer - they use Lepsons so a good job has been done. There was no stone chipping around the rear arches (which is another problem on these) but that may be due to the low mileage.

I did ask for the dealer to add armourfend as part of the sale but they were having none of it. I'm not too worried though as if it does happen later then hopefully the remaining BMW warranty should cover it (they have given me an extra 12 months as part of the deal so I have 24 months of warranty).

Very nice.  Must be just about the whole toybox......not much missing :)

Has it not had the clear film added around the rear arches?  I thought they all had that done nowadays to avoid chipping caused by the wheels?

Enjoy it  :D

Thanks :D the only major thing missing is the HUD which was on the car we test drove but SWMBO asked the sales guy to turn it off as she found it distracting so that was not an option I was looking for anyway :D

No film applied as this is a late 2011 car and I am told by the dealer that the film started to be added around the end of 2012 - not sure how correct this it but as I said above I'm not going to let this distract me from the experience today :D The warranty should hopefully cover any future issues of stone chipping as many of you have successful claimed on the BMW warranty :)

Nice spec and I'm sure you'll love it.

I would push to get the protective film applied though. I got mine in Sep 11 and it didn't come with it and after 7k miles, I had to have the rear doors and arches resprayed prior to having the film retrofitted.  I couldn't believe how bad the damage was considering the low mileage short commutes I was doing.

Thanks for the positive comments, appreciation and advice chaps. You are all a great bunch and a huge source of information. The sales chappy asked me how on earth I knew so much about the X5 and I sent him a link of this forum ;)

The drive home (120 miles) from Bristol was a lovely drive down the M4. I left Bristol at 5pm but was back hom at 6.20pm as the M4 heading south was surprisingly dead! The car returned 32mpg on the way home which IMHO is great for a car of this size.

I traded in an Audi Q7 3.0TDI S Line for the 40d and the 40'd absolutely blows the Q7 to shreds! There is just no comparison as the X5 is completely a driver focused car and almost grips and road like a bloody sports car (my other car is a Jaguar XKR). It's a highly impressive machine! The Q7 felt light and wobbly whereas this thing just sticks to the road and is tight around corners - The M Sport suspension probably helps and Im enjoying the drive and glad I went for an M Sport over an SE.

When I got to the showroom I was rather disappointed that some stone chips and a 5cm scratch on the passenger side rear door were not repaired! I had a good go at the sales manager and he was apologetic and was not sure why this was missed. Not a good enough reason in my opinion but he asked if I wanted the car repaired and if I wanted to come back to pick up another day to which I refused as I was not going back that far and adding a good 300 odd miles to my cars mileage for no fault of mine. Anyway to cut the long story short we agreed that I can have the bodywork blemishes sorted at my local BMW dealer and they will pick up the cost of repair so a good result.

Not letting the last paragraph dampen my experience of the 40d though as I'm totally and utterly in love with her - I keep trying to find an excuse to go out and drive her :D

I'd recommend the Panoramic Roof as a must have option - it's just bloody brilliant on a sunny summers day like this and almost gives that convertible kind of feeling :D We used the 7 seat option last night (yes on the first day LOL) and the rear seat occupants were a 7 year old and a 5 year old and both felt comfortable - adults have no chance though unless it's just a trip down the road to the local for a pint!

BMW connect is great - connected to an operator last night and asked for an address which was sent straight to my cars sat nav - love it! They did great me as Natasha as that was the previous owner of the car LOL I need to call them up today to have everything transferred to my name.

Internet option is probably as useless as the TV option as it can only be used when parked and when the gear lever is in the P position. It uses Edge and not 3g - the reason for this was because the car's internal sim can be used across the EU whereas if they used 3g then I guess BMW would be picking up huge data roaming charges or something. However reading various sources online they will soon provide a firmware update which will enable 3G to be used in the UK - this should make the internet option more useable. My two kids were gasping when they saw the google homepage on the idrive :D

I've not yet set up apps etc yet - this lets you access Facebook and twitter feeds on the idrive LOL don't think I'm too bothered with this but it's a good thing to show off to your mates as is the internet option!

Off to call BMW services from the car now so that they can create a profile for me - once this is done I will be able to use the BMW iphone app to unlock and lock my car and also locate it within a 1.5km radius. You can also use the app to blow the horn and flash the lights if you can't find your car in a car park - nice :)

Popped over to see Sanj this morning and let him drive her for a good 5-6 miles so I'm sure his comments will follow comparing it to the E53 - over to you Sanj  :beer2:

Ultimately the X5 is probably a better drivers car but when Audi lent me a FL Q7 whilst waiting for the RS it was night and day better than a previous one I had on long term loan before.
