Tyre losing pressure
Tyre losing pressure
One of my tyres keeps losing pressure overnight (33psi down to 7psi!) I've been to the tyre place 3 times now, they can't find a leak, changed the valve, cleaned the edges of the alloy up and painted a black sealent onto the edge of the alloy but once again it's gone down. It's a rear bridgstone with 7mm of tread on so I'm reluctant to bin it but as a last resort I'm considering getting the prepuncture gunk put in to see if that fixes it. My questions are:
Has anyone had this done?
What are the pro's and con's?
Should I just get this done in the affected tyre, or get them all done (all tyres are about 6/7mm)...or even just the rears!?

Re: Tyre losing pressure
Personally I would be inclined to 1st try another try workshop, albeit soounds as if they have tried hard.
It is of course technically possible for a 2nd valve to fail assuming 1st was the prob and not other issues you have tried to eleminate.
If it definitely seems like the tyre maybe call Bridgtsone & seek their advice. Years ago I got a new Dunlop on back of a call to the tyre manufacturer & discussing a faulty tyre.
If having to change I would, maybe source, (from reputable seller), a quality part worn identical tyre of similar depth, (lower price and ideally even depth to opposite tyre). Other option is to buy a new one bearing in mind the depth on same not much more.

Re: Tyre losing pressure
might also be worth putting on the spare, inflatign the tyre and leaving it with the workshop overnight (so they can see the issue first hand).
As the other reply said i would get the valve replaced again - could just eb unlucky
If it is going down that quickly you should alos be able to see a leak if you overinflate it to say 40psi (to stress the leak area)and immersing it a waterbath
Smee

Re: Tyre losing pressure
My tyre place always submerges the wheel / tyre in a waterbath. Makes spotting leaks easy.
Re: Tyre losing pressure
Sorry, I forgot to mention I have been to two different tyre fitters.
I called in again today and they have advised me to put some of the latex gunk in the tyre to sort it as they couldn't find the source of the leak. Rather than use the latex stuff I'm pretty certain I'm going to get this stuff put in www.puncturesafe.com it is water soluable so it can be cleaned out and the tyre repaired if need be...it casts £18 per tyre and to be honest I want to save myself £230 for a new tyre as there is 7mm still on.

Re: Tyre losing pressure
I can't believe it - I had that pre-puncture stuff pumped into the tyre the other day and it's sorted out the problem I had re the slow puncture . I was cleaning the car today and noticed a screw in the opposite wheel!!! So that's new tyres on for only seven days and now two punctures! It's not in the tyre wall so it'll be repairable but can't believe my mixed luck this week.
Re: Tyre losing pressure
How close to the tyre wall is it Pete? i only ask as the last time i spoke to my tyre guy i'm sure said that the rules had changed and that they couldn't repair punctures within about an inch of the tyre wall iirc.

Re: Tyre losing pressure
Hi,
Personally I would like to know why it was going down, all gunk will do is mask the problem & any other puncture the tyre receives ! You don't want to find out when doing 70mph in outside lane of motorway
Afaik the rules on puncure repair are they are only allowed if within the middle 75% of the tyre width. I know because I had puncture in my almost new 315/35 Toyo last year. So basically if the puncture was more than 118mm from the middle of my tyre ( 75% of 315 = 236 / 2 = 118mm ) they could not repair it, luckily for me it was within this ( just )
Are they sure it's not the wheel rim thats damaged or cracked !
Phil.

Good point that re the wheel rim ....i didn't think of that
did they try it in water in the end Pete?

Re: Tyre losing pressure
Sorry, I've been mad busy this last couple of weeks so my posts have been missing a lot of the detailed info.
The wheel went into a bath about three times (twice in one shop and once in another) and there were no signs of bubbles. They definitely did check the alloy because the chap rubbed it down to get a better seal as I was told the laquer was coming off (the wheel was then painted with a black sealing solution...but still went down after about 24 hrs). When I returned for a third time they told me they had checked it and had done all they could and I was advised to just spray some of that latex stuff into the tyre as it would solve the issue. I wanted something safer than that in case of blowouts and researched this puncturesafe product - it costs more than the spray but it's very impressive so I've put my faith in it.
As for the screw, I'm pretty certain that it is repairable as it isn't too close to the tyre wall. I think that I picked it up on the car park at focus or even at the car wash itself as it didn't seem battered. I'm tempted to get the puncture safe injected into all four tyres now but if I do go down that route I'll still check the tyres on a regular basis.
I think it's just bad luck and coincidence that I've struggled with punctures this week.
