Help please - directional tyre reversed

Post by Johnell » Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:32 pm

I had 2 Hankook Ventus ST106s (which are directional) fitted to the front of my X5 this afternoon.  I rushed to pick it up as they were closing and having got home I've just noticed that one of the tyres is reversed so the rotation arrow is pointing in the wrong direction.  I obviously want to get it sorted asap but will it cause too many problems if I drive with it like that because I'm meant to be leaving here really early tomorrow morning.

I understand there could be a problem with water dispersal, I've also read that delamination could occur if the tyre gets hot so my first thought is to postpone the trip until it's sorted, especially as I'll be towing a caravan.

The problem is there is so much speculation on the web so are there any tyre experts that could give me a definitive answer rather than a best guess or speculation please.

For info it felt fine on the way home.

Many thanks.
John

I'd put my spare on , then pop into a tyre fitting shop at your earliest opportunity, advise the shop who fitted it to see if they will reimburse you for the cost.

not sure about the heating issue (maybe true as well) but definitely  if its wet weather you'd be collecting water under the tyre and creating an aquaplane as opposed to dispersing it due the thread pattern being reversed.

in effect you're risking your safety especially at speed.

to compound then we have the 'summer' we're going through right now.

so i'd get it fixed or as said go for the spare before embarking on a long journey.

Thanks guys, the missus is spitting feathers but I've pretty much made up my mind to delay the trip until it's sorted.  I was hoping to beat the A14/ M1 traffic by leaving early and be in Matlock by 9am but it looks like it's going to be one of those journeys......still, better safe than sorry...... ::)

They have indeed but I know the guy pretty well and I know he's going to be mortified so I'm not going to be too hard on him.  However, this seems like a damned good bargaining point to get an even better price on the rears when I need them.  ;)

All sorted in minutes, they apologised profusely and our good relationship has been maintained.  :)

The Hankooks feel much better than the worn Duellers they replaced, though that is probably being helped by the full pro-align tracking etc that has been done.  The  pro-align guy gave me the printout and there were a fair few orange readings prior to the adjustments being made......all are green now.

Despite the later than planned start we had a good run to Derbyshire and averaged 25.4 mpg (OBC) towing the caravan.
