New X5 3.0D purchased

Post by APPLEX5 » Thu May 16, 2013 1:14 pm

Hi Everyone

I have just purchased a 02 plate X5 3.0D Sport in silver with 90,000.

There are a few things that need to be addressed and I would like some help.

1) The Key that I have does not operate the Alarm or central locking, I can do this manually and the central locking opens and closes fine.

I have inquired and apparently the battery requires changing, the unit is sealed so do I purchase one from the BMW dealreship? How much would it be

2) Some of the climate control facia buttons are faulty, I have looked on Ebay and you can buy the facia, is this hard to replace?

3) Some of the pixels are gone, I know this is a common fault on BMW's, does anyone know a mobile service in the south london area that can repair this?

Many thanks for reading.  :)

Hi, welcome to the forum.

1. Have a search on the forum for pairing the key to the car, before buying a new unit.
2. Not hard at all - look on eBay they have them.
3. Search again and you'll find reference to Rudi in Southampton

Welcome to the forum. :)
Sounds like the battery has gone flat, or as Sanj suggested it needs pairing to the car, I think the instructions may be in the Handbook.
To keep the battery charged you have to use all the keys within 6 months, as they charge up when in the ignition. Unlock the car and drive it with the faulting key for a while to see if it recharges.
Maybe it will then need pairing to the car again. But when pairing, all the keys must be paired within 30 seconds of each other or it won't work. As said loads of Internet instruction.
As for the facia button on the climate control, you can get the red and blue ones as a kit off EBay, from Germany
The rest can be bought separately but at a tender a go. I bought some off KKODAL  as he has a spare climate control unit so may have the ones you want. He is in the US military, so may be away from the UK at the present time. List which ones you require and PM him.

Hi Thanks for the advice. Apologies for late reply.

I have found out that the heater motor was faulty and the climate control unit was also not working. this has been fixed now. The guy that I bought it from agreed to fix :)

I will order a new key from the dealership and use this one as a spare, around £120.

I live in south london, is there anyone in this area that can be recommended to fix the pixels on the dash board?  have posted this question on another thread so forgive the cross posting

much appreciated :)

When i bought my x5 the central locking didnt work - same as you, worked in the lock but not remotely. Tried charging and pairing keys but still no joy....turned out I needed a new central locking module. Bout £200 fitted IIRC. Worth checking before spending on a new key IMHO.

Many thanks for the advice, how do I check if the central locking module is not working?

Also at the moment I assume that it is the key as i can lock remotely.

I know that the key also operates the alarm and this is synchronised by the sensor on the rear view mirror ( please advise if i am wrong), in my mind if it is the key,  once changed this should operate everything ( alarm, central locking) ?

thanks :)

hi just a quick update on where i am with this problem:-

i have now purchased a new key from the dealership, the customer service guy said he would pair it for me but had no luck.

i have spoken to a few people and they believe i need to program the key to work with the car, is this correct as the next step would be to give it to dealership to diagnose.

many thanks for reading :)

Yes I believe a new key needs coding............surprised supplying dealer did not tell you this.

The key will not need coding mate just pairing via the procedure found on the forum.

Does it start the car ok ?

If so sounds like you have an underlying problem , need to get it to a specialist to diagnose it.

Hi, yes it starts the car fine, does this mean if the key is put into key position 1 and then taken out, the forward button is pressed then the middle button pressed three times and the central locking does not activate there is an underlying problem?

Both my keys operated the central locking manually but i still needed a new module in order to get the remote locking working. If your new key drives the car but doesnt remotely lock it then i suggest again you look at the module!
