All you BMW drivers will just hog the outside lane now so nothing will improve!
No chance of that happening it's full of Audi's and Mercedes Sprinter vans!!
The outside lane is the fast lane and should be reserved for any car that can get to 60 in less than 5 secs. Fortunately all of mine do

Is that when you're 'drafting' the X6 M50d in front of you, or in a good tailwind?

Seriously though, when I was taught to drive the three lanes were referred to as the Slow Lane, Cruising Lane and Fast Lane - and that is partly where the issue has come from.  Now of course (and by the Police etc have always been so) they are Lanes 1,2,3 etc....but behaviour hasn't changed.  And the 'Drive on the left' in the Highways Code just gets ignored....

I still say the best way to promote better driving standards is to use motorway sin bins. Pull over if your reg comes on overhead sign or get fined. Whilst spending 15 minutes in sin bin you will be able to access literature or be shown looped film on the kinds of unacceptable driving you have been guilty of. Could have costa coffee shops in them to provide jobs as well. It would punish people who inconvenience others by adding time to their journey.

Either that or police marksmen shoot out their rears.....

Providing Costa coffee is punishment enough.

It's about the same price as a FPN anyway, and leaves the same bad taste.

can I just point something out as a part time lorryist, you would be amazed at how many times (at least once or twice a day) I undertake a car that is travelling slower than me in the middle lane, I have no choice as I cant go into lane 3,  also you see it time and time again lane 1 is empty for miles in front yet no cars use it!!

quite how they will enforce its another thing, also what often happens when im in the car on the 4 lane section of the m1 on a weekend im in lane 1 doing 70-75, its empty yet lane 2 and 3 have two lots of lane hoggers im expected to cross 4 lanes to go round 2 cars?  I personally think undertaking should be aloud and there was talk of this

I usually aggressively make a point of swinging out of lane 1 right at the back of lane 2 and swing right past the nose dropping back into 1.
I know its a bit wankerish. But if it makes a point to 1 car in 10. Its worth it

true again.. i think though if all the ppl start undertaking as well (bad enough a few 'forced' bad apples like u and me lol) it will be an utter chaos!

so justice should prevail i say - ppl should drive on teh left which should allow overtaking and make undertaking unnecessary. which means though - back to how that can be implemented  :'(

Middle Lane Hoggers to be fined

Post by snipez999 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 4:24 pm

Strange how many cars then go into lane 1 after you do this as well. They are therefore aware but just ignorant.  They say things like lane 1 has ruts from trucks and there is still lane 3 for you to overtake them etc

If you're going to undertake, at least do it in style......the hard shoulder. :P

I've seen that far too many times and actually watched a Fire Engine coming back from maintenance drive along the hard shoulder on the M25 for miles.  It only had a mechanic on board and he looked well pleased with himself.  Bet he did it all the way back to Leicestershire where it had come from.

I expect we've all done the undertake move at some point because of hoggers, as well as going all the way out the the outside lane and cutting back across their nose - at which point as said they suddenly realise there's a whole empty strip of Tarmac to their left that they could use instead!

As for 'tram lining' a lot of the hoggers cars aren't wide enough to do that!!

Perhaps we all need dashcams and an account with DfT for sending it in to........I wonder if we can play the Apple stunt and get 30% of the fines....... >:D

unrelated question - do coppers have special rights when there's no emergency?

was cycling home peacefully today in nice  hot summer weather (enjoying the scenery and all that lol) on the bus lane, when ahead of me was this copper  having a leisurely drive on the  bus lane, totally slowing me down!!

can they do that? when there's no emergency ie no siren no lights?
