Re: Are my tyres dangerous?
Thanks for opinions guys. No canvas showing, the discolouration is just dirt. looked through the history again and The car passed its MOT at the end of April, and it only came up as an advisory, so I was a little shocked today when I inspected it closely. I will definitely get the alignment gone ASAP. I'm waiting to hear back from the dealer I bought it from as to what they think before ordering the new rubber. Only picked it up last week, not saying they knowingly sold it to me with potential problems (and I know tyres are consumables, not covered under warranty) but at least want to see what they are willing to do about it. But if a bummer if I've hit a £500 tyre bill + alignment bill straight after picking it up.

As per the 2012 MOT Manual (Current Issue).......if it meets the requirements below then it is a Pass.
You were nearly right AW8 (I'm surprised about the bald edges too), and I actually agree that if it's bald at the edges it would not be a tyre I would want to run on......

Look like they've been swapped round from one side to the other and back again about 3 times. I'm surprised a visual inspection at purchase time did not show them up. But tyres are an investment in safety and you will know that a properly aligned set up and new rubber are en situ after and can just get on and enjoy the driving experience

Re: Are my tyres dangerous?
Did it come from a main dealer? I had a similar problem when I bought mine, but the fronts were scrubbing the outside edges and an mot a few days earlier had passed them, so the stealer said they were ok.
I believe AUC requires at least 4mm, but where it debatable on legality, a shyster dealer will rely on the MOT pass.
I complained to BMW UK, but they didnt give a toss. Worth a shout at the dealer, they can only say no, but you might get soething out of them. Mine was resolved by a proper tracking check and adjustment.

Am I reading that right....under Note in the 3rd column suggests that bald is ok so long as it's outside the middle 3/4? WOW

Re: Are my tyres dangerous?
This is a common problem especially if you have the wider wheels
Main causes being incorrect adjustment and worn bushes
See other posts for how to check them properly
Ensure that the air springs (if fitted) are depressurised then you can check for wear properly.
There is a video on youtube about how to do it and you will be surprised. I was..
Mine went like that after a very short time.
You dont tend to look at the inside so much, due to the width, and the rest looks great.
Found out the hard way that they are not run flats and that 20" wheels make a heck of a rumble when running on rims!

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

I agree with X5Sport................My prior outlined interpretation due to me being unaware of a minor legislative change.
