iPhone5 / Lightning latest

Post by silverous » Mon Jun 03, 2013 9:51 am

Hi,

I am picking up my X5 at the weekend, I have an iPhone 5.  I presume I need to get a BMW iphone cable as I did with my 335d that had 6FL but do I need an Apple lightning adaptor also as threads seem to suggest or have BMW sorted it in the cable/electronics now?

(as an aside, does anyone have any idea what Telephone USB audio interface option is?  I have it but can't find much about it)

Wondering how this option interacts with the iPod functionality and whether I'd be better off just getting an iPhone 5 cradle which I understand is due out.

Regards,

Paul

I plug my iphone 4S into a USB in the centre armrest - it works as a phone and ipod for music (under "external devices").  My wife's iphone 5 connects to the car via blutooth, but she's never bothered plugging it in via the USB for music.

Not sure that's an answer, but if I were you, I would delay buying a cradle as I think that you may get away with simply plugging in your iphone to the car with the standard apple cable you would use for charging/syncing it at home.

Good luck and enjoy the X....don't forget the pics.

If your X5 has a CIC unit then you don't need a BMW cable you can just use the Apple one!

Telephone USB audio interface option, I believe this just means a telephone baseplate is installed

Didn't know 5 cradle was out yet but not worth money as centre console USB works fine plus Bluetooth connectivity. You need it plugged in to use bmw online stuff (if you specced Internet).

Thanks, what is a CIC unit and how do I tell?  It is a 2013 car if that helps.  Traditionally you lost functionality with 6FL and just the Apple cable, the BMW cable had a little box on it from memory - is it album art or something you lose maybe?

If its 2013 then you have a CIC unit, I have a ipod connected to the 6FL usb via the apple cable and it displays everything including album art, the iphone will work exactly the same

USB integration means you should be able to use the multimedia type iphone cradle - at least you could if you had an iphone 4S or earlier and get video/artwork etc on the main display.

CIC is as said the latest (hard drive based) iDrive system and the other key part you will have is option SA6VC without which albums etc do not fully integrate.

It means you probably have SA6NF + SA6FL, and you might even have SA6NR - BMW Apps - in there too.  Not that the last are really much use IMHO.

Thanks X5Sport - I don't have the apps interface, just Media Pack (which I believe includes 6FL) and this USB phone integration thing, I guess with that I can leave bluetooth off to save battery life once the iPhone 5 cradle is available....
