BMW 40d compared to a 35d what is the main difference

Post by syg9m » Mon May 27, 2013 9:21 pm

Looking to buy an e70 with 7 seats and a tow bar , is it worth waiting for the right 40d to come along or to go for a 35d ?

The most noticeable difference is the eight speed gear box with the 40d.  This reduces the emissions and brings the road tax down from £460 ish to £250.

The gearbox comment is correct and probably worth looking out alone

The road tax comment is rubbish

All twin turbos however they were labelled were lower tax.

Correction to above, 40d is £260 35d is £280 for road tax so really not a reason not to go for the right one if it comes along.

Did the 35d get the later iDrive (CIC Type) or was that also a 40d only change?  The CIC (hard drive based) version is much better than the earlier (CCC) version.

Not sure but think you maybe right

The gearbox would be enough for me plus of course it has the proper exhaust pipes and DRLs

Hi thanks anything to watch out for ? Are there any options that I should definitely need apart from tow bar & 7 seats ?

Corroded alloys on M sports by the sounds of things

Also check rear wheel arches for chippings or protective film.

A towbar could be retrofitted so don't get too hung up on that.

Panoramic roof is a great luxury to have and not too rare so you should find examples with it.  Reverse camera with top view is very useful - retrofitting is a possibility but only for those in the know.  Head-Up Display seems like a marmite option - I've not got it or ever used it, but would have liked it.

Having owned both I would take the 40d anyday - pure sh%t of the shovel and the 8 speed box is superb. Yep check the chipping on rear arches and the wheels

Go for the 40d, I did a few weeks ago and I love it.
With the 8 speed it's an amazing drive, I read loads on here and was even looking for a 4.8 petrol at the start, I listened to the opinions and views on here and don't regret it one bit.
