Got my car sorted FINALLY!

Post by JimmySpeed » Mon May 27, 2013 9:48 pm

After my previous troubles with my 4.6is and discovering low compression in one cylinder, I finally found a garage to take it on a few weeks ago and we discovered a leaking head gasket and a cracked head.

It all got dismantled, refurbished and put back together in under a week but then waiting for silly parts from BMW added a week on. Resetting the timing was fun too, having to rent the proper tools.

Any way, a new head gasket, new water pump, new belts, new timing chain tensioner, a bundle of new gaskets, new timing chain guides, and a 'ton of other bits we changed that I can't remember' later, the car is running beautifully!

Not a single squeak, squeak or rattle and no misfire, it now runs so smooth that you honestly cannot tell the engine is on when it's idling.

The car was not right when I bought it in March so it's like a new car to me. To say I'm happy with it now is an under statement.

It's good to have it back, lightened my pocket by £1100 which isn't bad considering that one joker quoted the labour alone at £1500! That was 50 hours for him as he charges 30 per hour. The place I used charged me 500 labour for the whole job.

Bet your over the moon getting it sorted....

I had to rebuild a 4.4 X5 at work (basically the same set up) last year after the timing chain tensioner failed (fell out) that was heads off.....what a rats nest that was!!!!

I removed the front end bumper and front cross section gave me loads of room but still not a pleasant job made worse by the customer wanting to source the parts himself to save some pennies but it took him around 3 months and anyone who has done a job as big as this would understand how you like to take apart and put back together again fairly quickly while its all fresh in your mind so the 12 week gap made putting it back together a little more interesting that said it went without a hitch.

A quick note I have the full timing tool for the V8's if anyone ever needs to borrow it for free just leave me a deposit which would be returned upon the return of the tool.
