Can you change the way the autobox changes?

Post by Mick.H » Thu May 16, 2013 10:28 pm

By this I mean. Can you change the +/- around the opposite way in manual mode, so that its more intuitive?  I was wondering if it would be as simple as swapping a couple wires around?

Cheers
Mick

I have never enjoyed dring in semi because of this. My previous car was set up the opposite to the X, so pushing forward was shifting up and pushing backwards was shifting down, which makes far more sense. Then when I drive my Dad's Merc, I have to shift left and right   too many combinations!

Simple answer is yes you can.
There is a socket adjacent the gear stick that has the 4 connections on it
1 earth, 1 for "S" and 1 each for + & -

You will need a meter to check the + & - ones.

Only thing being that the consul will still show it the wrong way around, and if someone gets in it and is used to the "normal" way then they will downshift when wanting an up!!

Paddles can be set anyway you want and just parallel up to the appropriate lead on said plug.
They will then earth through the steering wheel earth
Obviously you need the SMG slipring assy for that though.

I have posted my mod somewhere else which was my interpretation of it...

have to admit I always wanted the flappy paddle mod on my x5 but I preferred the facelift wheel and the e46 one is the same as the pre facelift

You can modify any wheel (within reason) for the flappy paddle mod.
Just depends how brave / silly you are!!

I attacked my original wheel and inserted 2 miniture microswitches in the rubber backing of the wheel and the paddles fit through a slot made in the rubber backing.
The rubber actually provides the hinge point for the paddle.

Connections were to an SMG slipring (yup had to buy something!!) but got that as a bargain off Ebay.

Was thinking about either using a small radio module for the link, or imposing it over the Ibus that links to the steering wheel buttons.

I wouldn't mind doing this too. Let me know if you manage to source a couple of suitable stickers.  ;)
