Mot failure
Mot failure
Hi folks
My local Indy who has been doing my cars for years now has just failed X's mot on 'No beam pattern' from the headlights so he's putting a new pair of bulbs in. I trust him completely but I've never had a car fail on this before. They are factory-fit xenons so do xenon bulbs wear out before they pop? One of them was a little yellow compared to the other admittedly but I didn't realised it could be an mot failure point.
Oh well, another year's happy motoring for the price of a pair of bulbs ain't bad huh!
Cheers all

Re: Mot failure
HIDs tend to go yellow before they finally give out and the beam on the E53 was a 'flat' pattern with no 'wedge' shaped lift to the near side as you get with conventional Tungsten/Halogen filament bulbs The nearside lamp should have shown a slight step above the offside but that is all you get from the projector type. Bulb life is around 3,000 hours, but that's only an average.

Re: Mot failure
I don't know if it would affect the pattern, but xenons dim noticably through time long before they fail completely, putting new Philips 85122 bulbs in my Audi appeared to double the light output, you could see much clearer.
Re: Mot failure
Picked her up last night and yes, huge improvement with the new bulbs but 68 quid plus vat EACH!! They really need to be good at over 160 quid for the pair!!

Re: Mot failure
Ouch!!
Re: Mot failure
Ouch! But they used to be more each than you paid per pair. Philips & Osram OEM bulbs were over £200 each not that long ago.

Re: Mot failure
Shame I didn't see this earlier - A pair of Philips dip beam D2S 85122 can be sourced for circa £60 a pair from reputable suppliers.........You can go cheaper but care needed to avoid poor quality or indeed fake brand name items.

Scn Protect,Alarm Chirp,Ashtray del,Sub install,IV2,Screens,PS2 Media,Chrome rings,Schnitzer pedals,Reverse cam,Silver Grills,F/mirrors,Comp Spkrs,Heated S/W,20"168s,Splash scn,Arches,Remap,LED Tails,ACS Spoiler,'is' Bumper Trim,Rear heated seats,Rear blinds
Re: Mot failure
I think OEM was Philips &/or Osram. The link you gave was for one D2R I think ours are D2S like here
My link cheaper also as yours was per £49.95 per bulb
I believe both will fit albeit "D2S is for a projector application, and D2R is made for a reflector application.......
D2R has a painted shield on it as to where the D2S doesn't"
There is a shameless cut paste from HID planet for the above info.
