Well, congratulations. Good news is that the x5 is very flexible in terms of what will fit. I've always liked the Brittax seats as good compromise between cost / safety. Isofix is also a time saving option at times.

By the way, don't get sucked into the whole "travel system" thing. Just get quality seperate items.

I tried it but it's more difficult when you want to make them crawl out and de-ice your windows.......

Re: life change!!
We've got a Bugaboo Chameleon and to be honest it is a really good system that will see you through to the child being 4... not that they even like being sat in a buggy at 2! It's been used heavily when we went on a cruise and it's been a dream with no issues whatsoever.
Our initial car seat is a Maxicosi which you can pair up with an easyfix (isofix) base - which is worth it's weight in gold, just takes a second for it to lock in (no messing with seatbelts. You can also attach the Maxicosi seat(up to 12month) to the Bugaboo with adaptors (about £10 on ebay) which is really handy if the baby is sleeping. It's all expensive stuff but considering I didn't care much for prams/buggy's etc and this was the system my wife wanted, I have to say this is an excellent product which we will be using again in the next couple of weeks when the new baby comes along - you even have the option of changing the fabrics on the pram/buggy!
In addition to the above, once the baby gets to 1year old you will need to get a bigger seat...we opted for Britax as the seating on a lot of seats are rock hard but this one was padded.
Hope this helps!

BMW Also do their own range of baby and then child seats. Fit really nicely into the isofix fittings already on the back seats which means they can clip in/out in a second.
When bambino No1 arrived we went for a Gracco travel system, seat, seat base, pram from Toys R Us - as baby 1 grew up, she got a new Maxi Cosi seat (which is brilliant) and Baby No 2 moved into the Travel System - as we now had two this was wifes perfect excuse to replace travel system pram with the 'Phil & Teds' Sport double buggy - which was/is brilliant but weighs half a ton and has the turning radius of an Artic!!
So baby in Gracco and toddler in Maxi Cosi (all in the S-Max though...)
In the X I fitted two of BMWs own seats - and find them brilliant - I know some disagree (including my wife) but got them both on ebay - and give the sellers their due they both arrived in near perfect condition and i had no hesitation in using (at this stage baby No1 was 3 and No2 was 1) - these BMW seats will adapt and should keep them comfy upto age 9. The 'baby' seat uses a 'roll pad' as opposed to harness which though looks strange the youngest seems to find it really comfy for sleeping on!
BMW own seats (they also do a version for the first 9month
