Thoughts on this potential X5 buy?

Post by benobi » Wed May 08, 2013 11:04 pm

Hi everybody

Haven't bought a new car in years. Currently drive a 2003 325Ci coupe but the missus is about to pop and has put her foot down, so the coupe is gonna go.

I just put down a test drive deposit for an X5 Will be trying it out on Saturday. Have to trek a fair hundred miles plus to get to it though, so was hoping for people's thoughts on whether this is a bad/good/great deal, and whether I can ask for more money off it or what added extras would make sense to ask for, as I'm gonna have to decide there and then pretty much once the drive is over.

I'm buying from an official BMW AUC dealership. Originally saw this on the BMW website for £45k but then it's dropped to £43k, and then £42.5k on my first asking. Story is that it's been on their books for a few weeks since it was sold but finance fell through so it had to go back on the market, so they needed to drop the price to sell quick. Originally owned by a dude but his wife said it was too big so traded it in for an X3. Allegedly.

It's an X5 xdrive40d M-Sport, registered Sept 2012, 3k miles on clock, titanium silver, black nevada interior. Here are the additional options:

20" M Double-spoke style 333M alloy wheels
Bootlid operation. powered
Dark Bamboo wood interior trim
Ext. mirrors - folding. auto dimming
Exterior trim. High-gloss Shadowline
Internet
Loudspeaker system - BMW Business
Media package
Panoramic glass sunroof
Reversing Assist camera with Top View
Seat heating. front
Sun protection glass
Third-row seating
Towbar. detachable

Dealer has also offered £3k for the coupe, which I think is actually ok... I'm toying with the idea for the added convenience as well.

So... what does everyone think? Is this a no-brainer yes on paper?

Cheers

Ben

Not sure what the media package includes now, but if it does include Nav then get them to put the 2013 maps on - that'll save you £300.

Stealing from Jig's recent purchase, ask what insurance deals they have through that dealership (they are different from dealer to dealer) and then see what you can get chucked in for free - like tyre insurance, minor dents insurance, service package (if not already there), additional warranty on top of what's there already.

Get the price down to as close to £40k and then ask for these on top and see where you meet?

Is £42.5k a great price compared to other cars on the market with similar spec/mileage?

As Barney has stated, give the paintwork a thorough going over, don't forget the tyres too.

Oh and a full tank of fuel, key rings, caps, flowers for the better half! Then pretend you got em! ;)

As others have said really, when negotiating a deal don't be scared to lowball them, worse they can say is no. If you have the guts to walk away makes it more interesting as I've known dealers to call peoe back to reconsider lower offers when no other interest.

Are you paying cash or financing? If financing, again makes more margin for movement in price as they get good money for selling finance.

Good luck with it though.

Hahaha, you guys kill me! I'd be a rubbish salesman and would probably cave in if faced with you guys. Can you come and negotiate on my behalf??!! :)

Thanks for all the tips. Will shake the tree and see what falls out.

Cheers

Nah we were planning on trying to save as much as possible and pay it all upfront to avoid the interest with financing.

On further investigation, I noticed a couple of odd things with this X5.

1. It's being marketed by another dealer, but this other dealer looks like an independent and isn't BMW AUC. I called them and they suggested that it was being bought by another dealer (i.e. the BMW AUC that's now selling it to me). It is on at £47k with the indie dealer though. Is that shady, should I be worried about that? I wanna call them again to ask more but not sure what to ask.

2. On the indie dealer's advert, they list the X5 as 'Derestricted' - apparently this is something to do with the max speed restriction being lifted. No mention of this on the BMW AUC advert though. Again, is this a good or bad thing?
