I downloaded some cd tracks I own from  my itunes to a cdr so my daughter could have a cd of her favourite tracks the cd player doesn't recognise the disk. Is this a common problem because the cd unit is old tech?

Some old players can't reed, rewritable discs, put it on a disc that is just a one use disc and try that.
Or they could be in MP3 format, with them being from iTunes , so if its not an all regions player it will not recognise MP3

If it is in MP3 format then you need to have a mid-2005 onwards build car.

It certainly should work with CD-R discs, but they may need to be recorded at slower speeds (2x to 4x)  the lasers don't seem to be very good with higher speed (16x) recordings and certain CD burners.

Did you get a working disk in the end?

Certainly the 2005 onwards players handle CD-r and MP3, WMA and WAV without any problems. Earlier players should still handle CD-R as long as they are burned as red book audio CD's..

Earlier changers should handle CD-R disks, but you must make sure that the disk is burned as a Red Book audio CD, not just drag the files over which would normally create a "data" CD . Most CD burning programs will happily create "audio" CD's

The later changes play both Audio, and Data CD's. If you can spot the label on the CD changer, it should be easy enough to identify what your drive is capable of playing

For what its worth, I found that non standard "90" minute / 800MB disks worked great on the 2005 players, infact even overburned to 92.5 minutes they were still playing with 100% reliability and no "clunks" from the drive .  Quite nice to have 1800 songs at a reasonable bit rate spread across two magazines

My 2002 changer is quite fussy about the brand of blank discs it reads, it doesn't like Tesco or poundshop discs, but it reads the unbranded ones from my work no problem.
