Redex diesel cleaner

Post by Reedler » Sat May 04, 2013 8:44 am

Hi All,

Anyone used Redex in there diesel tank and are there any benefits or pitfalls to using it. My Neighbor has recently sold his X5 and swore by the stuff. I have a 55 plate X5 Sport 3d with 84,000 on the clock. Any replys welcome.

Many Thanks

There's a fuel filter between the tank and the engine (that's hard to get at from what I've read)...what would redex do to that if it had done it's job and had "filtered stuff" in it?

I'm not even sure what the symptoms of a "used" filter are or whether performance is degraded....wouldn't throwing Redex at it loosen the stuff in the filter...in a bad way?

Your call but BMW say don't use any additives at all.

I've used the millars stuff recently, and it has helped in making the engine a tad quieter and smoother delivery. Whether or not that's just the placebo effect, I have no idea. Lol

Bmw themselves are strongly against this. However if your car is out of warranty and high mileage I don't see the harm in a decoking with millers (which is the brand I have heard better reports on).

There is a product being touted for diesels on the VW forums, called Diesel Rhino.  Am always sceptical about these additives, but gave it a try with our ultra-uber-high-mileage Caravelle 2.5TDi. ( nearly at 300 000 miles! ) and it really does seem to make a difference -the developer is a VW enthusiast as well, hence its high profile on the T4 forum.  I bought a 3l bottle of the stuff and it has definitely made the old van run cleaner, less initial smoke etc.  i must say, though, for An ancient vehicle with that kind of mileage, she runs brilliantly - as tight and responsive as a vehicle with under 50k on the clock.  So while I am not entirely converted to additives, I will keep up the Diesel Rhino, as it really seems to work.

I agree with the premise that if you have an older, high mileage, out of warranty vehicle, there is no harm in using additives.
