Buying an X5 E53 causing me headaches
Re: Buying an X5 E53 causing me headaches
Thanks everyone for the info and help,
Im happy to say I'm now a proud owner of 2001 Y 4.4 V8 running LPG and I really wasn't expecting it to be as well presented as it was,
I was fortunate enough that i spotted the ad within 20 mins of it going live so I was the first person to contact and view the motor which I think has been my problem up till now I've been way down the pecking order and the ones I've looked at up till now have been seen and left long before I turned up
The trader I picked the motor up from today didn't really know literally anything about LPG and as a result I think he way under priced it I'd say it was even a bit cheap for a standard non LPG 4.4 V8 due to it's condition compared to what I've seen,
Engine and gearbox is sweet it comes with amazingly Full BMW Service history last one just 1000 miles ago and i counted 13 dealer stamps in the 127K it has on the clock so around every 9.5k with a mounting of paper work history,
As soon as I got it home I shot into work got it up on the ramp and gave it a good going over and it's practically faultless only real thing is it could do with a pair of front tyres in the next 1k so I'm chuffed to bits.
The guy i bought it from was a genuinely nice bloke had no objection of plugging in the Bosch diagnostics machine i borrowed from work and I found no faults in the ABS, Airbag, Transmission only one fault was recorded in the Engine ECU and that was the electronic thermostat fault, I had this fault in 2 of my previous 4.4's so not an issue although after clearing it and checking it after the 100 mile drive it hasn't returned but if it does I'll address it and sort it.
Bodywork wise its great only issues being a strip of rust coming through on the upper boot lid bottom edge (which will be sorted and resprayed Saturday) and it has a hand print mark in the paint, I've seen this issue before and its normally as a result of hand cream that transfers from the hand to the paint where it sits there and affects the surface so that will simple need to be wet flatted and machine polished back up and that's it outside is nearly as good as the mechanics.
Interior is great tidy full black leather with the silver aluminium trims only thing is there's no wide screen sat nav so I'll look to retro fitting or a double din pioneer touch screen sat nav stereo unit.
I'll post up some pics after the spray work and machine polish on Saturday

Good find buddy!
Regarding the retrofit its been done a few times. Both Raj and myself went for this option although the route we took were slightly different. Have a nose and im sure you will pick up quite a bit of information.
Heres my install:
http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/https://xdr ... 6#msg68246
And heres Raj's install:
http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/https://xdr ... ic.php?t=8
I think both look better than the matt black fascia you normally get.

Re: Buying an X5 E53 causing me headaches
Nice one mate, chuffed for you. Like you say there are a lot of bad X's out there that can easily turn into a nightmare. You only need that bit of luck like you had by seeing the ad early. I too had similar luck by seeing the ad for my car early off this site.
It must be great to have the knowledge and the facillities you have at your disposal to also keep the running costs down.
Mine came with a BMW warranty and had the usual expensive issues already sorted so after carefull consideration I have decided not to keep the warranty going but i am keeping these payments to one side just incase.
Having had a nice one before it still needed good money spending on it to keep it ship shape, thats the only advice i can offer you.
Look forward to seeing the pics of your car and the Audi looks a good job.
Cheers, Gav.

Sounds as though you have found a good one. Good luck with it.
Like you mine came from a General Trader we drove past it several times going to look at other cars Disco's Range Rovers, Landcruiser you name we looked at them. I like you dont think the Trader realised what a benefit LPG is. It was on his forecourt for quite a while and was about £2k below anything else we had looked at. I did the research on X5's then when we test drove the car there were a few creaks from the suspension which I used a s a bargaining tool the trader changed the rear subframe bushes as part of the deal and like you we had our bargain tow car.
