Hi from Derbyshire

Post by X5Dave » Sun Apr 28, 2013 9:27 pm

Hi all,

I may be joining the X5 ranks, depending on your much needed advice!

I have been offered an 03 plate X5 3.0d sport by a friend who is downsizing. I have always loved the car but was just wanting to make sure I know what I'm buying. It has 106k with full history and she wants £6000 for it.

Does this price seem ok to you? Also, should I be asking any particular questions/checking anything in particular before buying it?

Any advice much appreciated,

Thanks,

Dave

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Your friends car is in the ball park for its age at 6k, if its in good condition, has it got the media package, sat nav Bluetooth, etc. this will be a pre facelift ( pre 2004 ) car. They are not as powerful as the facelift cars, they have the 5 speed gearboxes which can be troublesome, 2k to replace, ( the facelift cars also can have gearbox failures but not as common)
The headlights are pre projector headlights, so no HID conversions, unless it has xenon s already.
These cars can be a money pit if your unlucky enough to buy a duffer. But saying that if you get a good one they are a fine, enjoyable car to own.
There is a buyers guide on the forum which is very good, well worth a read.
There is also plenty of past posts you can peruse to give you a good idea of the joys and pitfalls of owning a 10 year old X5

Welcome aboard.

You're in the right place for sure.

The buyers guide does really help the areas you need to be looking at. As long as your frond has properly maintained hers then shouldn't be too much of an issue. Most things can be resolved with relative cheapness compared to taking to the main dealer.

Good luck.

As above read the buyers guide (I didn't) I only had a couple of niggles on mine but still cost me £450 to sort out they are great vehicles and this site is spot on for advice and banter.

No not that bad. You just need to spend a little time getting your facts sorted as to what to look for and have an idea what may need doing before taking the plunge :ok:

My friends x5 I am buying recently had injectors replaced and had new gearbox in 2006 plus it's been well maintained so I guess I couldn't find one much better even tho it hasn't got the comma pack
