Shocking! You deserve better.  ;)

I know. The only thing that keeps me going each night is the fact that I know I have 3 fast great fun petrol cars to fall back much like yourself.

In fact will you be my friend?

Ties have their place, but they are not a must.  If my clients don't wear them, I won't - I don't want to embarrass them.

You father lived in a different age - maybe he wore a trilby too or sometimes a flat cap?  Times change and so do fashions and people's expectations.  Dressing differently to your parents is not necessarily laziness.  Dressing differently to your peers might be sloppiness or perhaps thoughtless.

IMHO a classic, navy single-breasted suit, with 2 buttons and a crisp white double-cuffed shirt but no tie, would look a lot smarter than a "fashion" suit (top shop/burton etc) with a "trendy" tie

Huck, what have you started?!

No flat caps for my old Man. A navy blue jacket single breasted jacket with 2 buttons and a crisp white double-cuffed shirt was his look.

Also the tie is a must is a tongue in cheek comment. It's a must for me is what I meant. Everyone I have had a meeting with in the banking and finance industry has worn a tie at meetings in which I have been present and its a trend that follows, and a tie in meetings is an expectation in our office but perhaps it's just where I work!

Each to there own.

I got a double glazing quote once from a bloke who turned up in I think an S500 Merc new model. No way was i going to pay for his garage toys. Appropriate dress is the key. Smart when required - I do a lot of HMG department hob nobbing- and Ralph (slacks and Oxford shirt) when not. Then again as senior management I feel I have standards to promote. Fluorescent logo t shirts are worn by temps who don't give a toss. I'm just back from management awayday in slacks shirt (no tie but cuff links) and casual corduroy jacket. Slag me off.....

I had that once. Chap turned up in a Jag S type (nice enough) but then proceeded to tell me he was a millionaire (on paper at least)

Not something I want to hear! Only close friends know of my other business ventures that puts me in the same position certainly not clients or worse still prospects!

Image is difficult  with cars and is something I am conscious of. I will never take the mrs car to a client that doesn't know me properly. Our office is in the high street with private parking. My mrs works for me so at least two of our cars are there every day and I'm known in the town for the one with the flash cars which has helped get me known but possibly a downside as some will think we are too expensive. My senior partner (based in our london office)has a new V8 Volante AM and when I've been places with him people have made comments such as he looks expensive as he steps out of the car in his tailor made suit. I just tell people he is good and when they realise he is then that helps!

Talking of which for years he has not worn a tie (as many of us don't in the office) and he has just started wearin one again and you know what I think he looks smart which is why I do now like wearing one again.

I do however think that with crisp clean clothes you can look smart wearing certain jeans/ t- shirts / shirt and cuff links etc

I never took to ties, ditched mine very quickly as I hate the feeling around my neck. Also, for some reason, roll my sleeves up ASAP if I can get away with it in any particular situation. Have done so since I was a kid.

Funnily enough, my default 'style' as a junior doc has now become de rigeur - shirt sleeves rolled up, no ties - all to prevent hospital infections.
