Have to admit I didn't know that about the E46 330cd vert. My facelift 330d saloon was an auto.

I think if money was no concern I would go for the X5M with its twin turbos, it would be awesome.

However, for the likes of me and reality I would opt for the diesel, as I could afford to buy and also run it. I have only driven brother in laws X6 35d Sd and that went really well and it sounded a bit like a V8, I know it sounds odd, but its true and I was amazed by it. Unfortunately he's sold to a mate of his.

I agree if driving a car to max on a track manual and petrol cars seem to be better (although the DCT & DSG gearboxes are good) as I found with my Astra Vxr, but in the real world with all the traffic it's a different proposition.

I like either petrol or diesel as we have my wife's Astra diesel, I have the X5 4.4 V8 and an Audi TT 3.2 roadster which has a nice sound.

When we bought my wife's Astra 1.9 sri 150 bhp diesel, she wanted a newer astra didn't mind which engine as long as it had a sunroof. I wanted the diesel as it was quicker 0-60 and top end over the equivalent 1.8 petrol or even the 2.0 petrol turbo 5dr with better torque, fuel consumption, a good spec and is practical.

Some of these diesel Astras are chipped to 200 bhp and 370 lbft torque and my mates 1.9 diesel van did upset a lot of standard Astra VXR's which was classic to watch.

For me I like both, but if buying and running one with my money then at the moment it would be a diesel X5 or X6.

I guess instead of being a Petrol-heads we are now becoming Diesel-nuts  :))

Horses for courses IMHO

In an 'X' which is not a 'sports car' by any stretch of imagination I think the diesel is more suited.  The drivability of the torquey diesel at lower RPM with the auto box config suits the weight and achievable driving style of the more cumbersome SAV.  That isn't saying that the M50d wont shift but an X even in the top M Sport guise will never be an R8

With a smaller, lighter car with lower COG and designed to be sporty, a manual (or DSG type equivalent ) box with a petrol engine has got to be the order of the day.  As said many times before, you just can't beat the high rev soundtrack when being progressive.

But what do I know eh? ;)

Correct. One of the reasons I am a hated man at dealerships round Manchester is my insistence at 'proving' the boot space by bringing my golf clubs and leccy trolley along Lol.
Should have seen the rep trying to ram them in a GTR.
And yes Audi boy I know you have a boot but you are too close to the floor for my liking (goes for your car too)!
I still reckon that Lambo SUV would be right up my boulevard.......

I don't think it is only the car dealerships that feel like that.

You would hate the boot of the new f type then. Went to special launch a couple of months ago in Town

GTR is dull

You only need big cars because you have a small knob
