Any offshore workers here???

Just wondering if there are any offshore workers here? Looking for a bit of advice (other than, just keep at it) on how to get a start?? Passed my BOSIET, MIST medical and my Banksman/Slinger courses. Been sending weekly emails with certs & CV attached to around 400 contatcs and posting out the odd copy here and there too. LinkedIn website has helped a lot but still nothing solid as of yet.

I know I will have to start as a roustabout or a steward and I'm not aiming for anything higher than these levels but I just need a start!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi,
I work as a wind turbine tech offshore which might be worth considering if you have an electrical/mechanical background. We aren't actively recruiting at the moment but I would expect things to get moving again soon as we start to push further offshore.

A friend of mine works on the rigs and another is on ROVs, I'll email them and see if they they have any inside tips.

There is a group on Facebook called offshore jobs which has been posting lots of jobs. As you have said there seems to be plenty on LinkedIn, just make sure your profile and CV are upto scratch.  Getting that first step on the ladder does seem to be very hard. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time while I was leaving the military, plus 28yrs relevant experience probably helped.

Depends what you are aiming for and your reasons for working offshore. I work in Oil & Gas but work onshore in Kazakhstan - the same benefits (time off and decent pay) but without living on a platform in the middle of the sea. What is your background? What sort of position would you like in say 5 years?

I'm also looking at offshore work, but in helicopters.  Just need to get my head down and do yet more exams to be suitably qualified.  ::)

The Super Puma doesn't exactly have the best reputation when it comes to gearbox reliability....... .  A bit like the E53 really, but without the 2,000 ft drop...

The Sikorsky S92 is replacing a lot of the Super Pumas.  More to instill confidence with in the industry.  I've always flown, light or medium helicopters and fancy the idea of getting to grips with a heavy lift......... >:D

I did consider trying to lift 535dboys ego, put that just proved too heavy!

Received a phone call today from Drillmar asking if I would be interested in being placed on a course ran by them. Something to do with nitrogen. If I pass the course it would be AdHoc. Obviously I was delighted to even get the phone call so I am now on the list. Hopefully I will get picked for the course and fingers crossed this can be my ticket into the offshore industry!!


As for my background, I have been a postman since I left the school.............I know, I know, they dont need posties on the rigs!!

I would be happy working with the deck crew as a roustie, I would even consider the service side of things as a steward. I just need the "foot in the door" first!!

Rossco, a few thoughts.

Are you expected to pay for the course?  If so, I would do some research to satisfy yourself that they can deliver the training the industry is looking for and you will therefore get work.  If they don't charge, well then it's a no brainier.

Don't be afraid to ring around to see what the companies are looking for.  CVs are very hit or miss and as you are currently not working the rigs or experienced, I'm sorry to say your CV will go to the bottom of the pile.

This isn't meant to dishearten you, but likewise don't wait around for someone to come a knocking.  Go put yourself on their radar!
